At the time of its emergence, The Beatles was received with two different reactions; a very enthusiastic and warm welcome by the youth and a very strong objection by parents, teachers and government. The Beatles brought to the surface many things that people didn't realize before and caused many changes. To the youth, it symbolizes freedom, an outlet of expression, a time to be the center of the attention; to the working class people The Beatles was a hope for the eradication of the invisible restriction wrapping them (known as class division) and a medium to go to the higher plane in the society; and to the Establishment The Beatles was an alarm of threat to the power and authority they possessed. With so many interests and ideologies took part behind the sky rocketing popularity of the band, it is very interesting to observe further the phenomenon which later involved many people in the United Kingdom and also the world. More interestingly, the attitudes first showed by the elite group of people called the Establishment has eventually changed. Not only did they accept the group but also now they co-opt the group as nation's cultural identity. Clearly there has been a big change in the society, and this thesis would like to investigate the contesting ideologies behind the change and the circumstance in Britain's present society through cultural studies approach with the focus on moments of Representation and Production / Consumption using Semiotics theory in the concept of Mythology set forward by Roland Barthes."
