"ABSTRAKTulisan ini membahas K-pop sebagai budaya populer Korea Selatan. K-pop telah menjadi salah satu produk budaya populer yang dinikmati banyak orang di seluruh dunia. Munculnya K-pop sebagai musik populer perlu dikaji dari perkembangan budaya yang dipengaruhi oleh perubahan sosial, politik, dan ekonomi di Korea Selatan. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis K-pop dikaitkan dengan perjalanan perkembangan budaya di Korea Selatan. Penulis menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dan pendekatan diakronis dalam penelitian. Dari hasil analisis, ditemukan bahwa munculnya K-pop dipengaruhi oleh budaya asing, yaitu budaya populer Amerika yang masuk pada tahun 1950-an. Budaya populer Amerika tersebar di Korea Selatan melalui konser pop di markas militer Amerika Serikat 8th Army, hiburan di klub, dan saluran komunikasi American Forces Korean Network. Perkembangan ekonomi dan teknologi, kebijakan terkait budaya, dan globalisasi pun menjadi faktor penting yang membentuk K-pop saat ini. Hingga kini, pengaruh budaya populer Amerika pada K-pop dapat dilihat melalui judul maupun lirik lagu yang mengandung unsur Bahasa Inggris.

ABSTRACTThis paper study about K-pop as popular culture in South Korea. K-pop has become a product of popular culture consumed by people around the world. The emerge of K-pop as popular music need to be investigated from the perspective of social, political, and economic changes in South Korea. This paper means to analyze K-pop in correlation with the cultural development in South Korea. Researcher uses the descriptive qualitative method and diachronic approach in the analysis process. The finding shows that K-pop is influenced by foreign culture, which is American popular culture that gain entrée in 1950s. The American popular culture disseminated in South Korea through pop concerts in the US 8th Army military base, performances in US nightclubs, and a US radio station, American Forces Korean Network. The technology and economy, cultural policy, and globalization become the important factors that shaped K-pop today. Until this day, the influence of American popular culture in K-pop reflected through the use of English in song titles and lyrics."
