"This article describes documentation and collecting phase ofNagari Koto Besar, Dharmasraya West Sumatera folktales.These folktales then analized with Bascom’s function theory.Based on analysis, there are 9 folktales which describes history of KotoBesar. The folktales are Asal Usul Munculnya Koto Besar, RumahTuo, Burung Beo dan Koto Besar, Penghormatan terhadap Raja,Sapi yang Dilarang, Orang Bunian, Padi Sebesar Biji Kelapa, Bukik Mayang Taurai, and Sungai Bayie dan Sungai Balun. "

"Folktale is one of media which record historical and cultural events. It’s alsoone form of local genius of the society. So, those folktales need to be documentedfor next generations. This article is result of documentation, classification,and function analysis of Nagari Sungai Naniang folktales. The research usefolklore perspectives. The result shows there are seventeen story tales in NagariSungai Naniang. Twelve stories are classified into legend and five are tale.Furthermore, three stories serves as a projection of desire and expectation ofsociety, one story serves as a validation tool and the institutions of a culturalsystem, eight story serves as an educational tool, and two stories serve as a supervisor of norms.Meanwhile, six of those folktales are in near extinct condition."
