"Optimisme adalah pemikiran yang didasarkan pada ekspektasi positif mengenai hasil yang akan diperoleh di masa mendatang.Ekspektasi positif tersebut dilatarbelakangi oleh tujuan yang telah ditetapkan. Skala kepentingan tujuan tersebut berbanding lurus dengan nilainya dalam motivasi. Dengan kata lain, semakin penting tujuan yang dimiliki maka semakin besar pula nilainya dalam motivasi seseorang. Dalam mencapai tujuan tersebut, seseorang akan menyesuaikan perilaku dan egonya dengan sesuatu yang hendak diraih. Rasa percaya diri, yang merupakan elemen konseptual pada nilai ekspektasimembantu seseorang dalam berupaya mencapai tujuan. Seseorang yang optimis akan mengedepankan ekspektasi mengenai hasil yang baik dan bertahan melawan segala rintangan yang dihadapi. Pemikiran tersebut dapat dilihat pada Candide, yakni tokoh utama dalam dongeng Candide ou L’optimisme karya Voltaire, yang dibahas dalam artikel ini.Hampir di setiap langkah dalam petualangannya ia menemukan permasalahan. Namun, di setiap kesulitan itu pula pertolongan dalam segala bentuk menghampirinya. Kemudahan-kemudahan yang ia peroleh di balik setiap permasalahan tersebut dipengaruhi oleh pemikiran optimisnya.

Optimism is a thought which is based on positive expectation about the result that will be gained in the future. The positive expectation has been established by the fixed purpose. The importance scale of the objective is directly proportional to its value in motivation. In other words, if the purpose which is owned more essential, its value will be greater in motivation. While trying to reach the purpose, people will adjust their behavior and ego to something that is going to be achieved. The confidence which is the second conceptual element in expectancy-value helps people to reach their purpose. The optimist will put forward the expectation about the good result and survive against the obstacles faced. The thought can be seen in Candide, main character in Candide ou L’optimisme, written by Voltaire which is discussed in this article. He often found the problem in each step of his adventure. However, he got the help in any forms after have been attacked by the difficulties. All of those ease that he found behind each of problem have been influenced by his optimism."
