"Dalam menerjemahkan teks sumber, buku Battlefield of the MindÂ?Devotional, penerjemah menggunakan metodologi penerjemahan fungsional model Christiane Nord (1997). Menurut pandangan Nord, penerjemahan adalah suatu bentuk tindak komunikasi lintas budaya dengan suatu tujuan tertentu. Penerjemah berperan sebagai mediator. Penerjemah dalam melakukan tugas profesinya berpedoman pada tujuan penerjemahan teks sumber sebagaimana yang tercantum pada arahan yang dibuat oleh klien dan telah disepakati oleh penerjemah. Arahan berisi informasi mengenai teks sasaran yang diharapkan. Informasi tersebut, antara lain, adalah Tujuan menerjemahkan teks sumber, fungsi teks sasaran, Pembaca teks sasaran, Medium yang digunakan, Waktu dan tempat teks sasaran diperkirakan dapat diterima olej pembaca sasaran. Untuk menghasilkan teks terjemahan yang sesuai dengan arahan, penerjemah menganalisis teks sumber untuk mendapatkan informasi yang sama dengan yang tersebut di atas tetapi mengenai teks sumber. Dalam terjemahan ini, teks sumber dianalisis dengan analis teks model Halliday dan Hasan (1976, 1985), dan Martin Joos (1962). Penerjemah kemudian membandingkan informasi hasil analisis teks sumber dengan informasi yang ada pada arahan. Setelah membandingkan keduannya, penerjemah diharapkan dapat mengidentifikasi permasalahan dalam menerjemahan teks dan diharapkan dapat mengatasi permasalahan tersebut secara relatif lebih mudah karena masalahnya sudah dapat identifikasi.

The Functional approach to translation as discussed by Christiane Nord in her book (Translating as a Purposeful Activiy.1997) is applied in this annotated translation. This functional approach sees translating as a purposeful activity. The prime principle determining any translation process is the purpose. In the course of the translation, the translator first of all, acts as a receiver of the source text as well as the translation brief. The translation brief contains the following information. The motive for the production of or reception of the target text, The function of the target text, The target-text addresses, The medium over which the target text will be transmitted, The prospective time and place of the target-text reception. In order to produce the target text that meets the translation brief, the translator analyzes the source text. The focus on analyzing the source text is the various aspects of the source text context that might rise to translation problems. In this particular translation, the source text is analyzed in terms of field, tenor, and mode, and in terms of language and organization that expresses the aspects of the source text context (Halliday and Hasan. 1976, 1985) as well as in terms to level of the source text formality. (Martin Joos. 1962). After comparing the source text-in-situation and the target text-in-situation given in the brief, the translator should be in position to identify the translation problems and should be able to come up with adequate translation solutions."
