"Writing Material Culture History examines the methodologies currently used in the historical study of material culture. Touching on archaeology, art history, literary studies and anthropology, the book provides history students with a fundamental understanding of the relationship between artefacts and historical narratives. The role of museums, the impact of the digital age and the representations of objects in public history are just some of the issues addressed in a book that brings together key scholars from around the world. A range of artefacts, including a 16th-century Peruvian crown and a 19th-century Alaskan Sea Lion overcoat, are considered, illustrating the myriad ways in which objects and history relate to one another. Bringing together scholars working in a variety of disciplines, this book provides a critical introduction for students interested in material culture, history and historical methodologies."

The research object raised in this study is the Kedaulatan Rakyat daily newspaper industry in Yogyakarta. The choice of Sovereignty of the People as the object of research is because there has been no study of industrial archeology in Indonesia which has taken the printing sector or the newspaper industry as the topic of discussion. This research focuses on describing the production of the daily newspaper Kedaulatan Rakyat in 1945-1968 through the material culture that was left behind, such as machines and tools. As one of the oldest newspapers in Indonesia which was born forty days after independence and still publishes news today (living industrial heritage), Kedaulatan Rakyat plays a big role in helping the government maintain Indonesian independence, especially in the Yogyakarta area. In the past, news texts in newspapers were made using manual machines by pressing embossed metal letters on newsprint. Of course, it is different from the production of newspapers today, using sheets in the form of plates and modern printing presses, which is more effective and efficient in producing newspapers in a short time and in large quantities. The research method from Kenneth Dark was chosen to describe the production of newspapers in the past. Dark sees that material remains can only explain his existence, for this reason these remains need to be placed in an interpretation framework by linking them to history and the function of the material culture so that they become archaeological evidence. Through these series of procedures, the production process of the Kedaulatan Rakyat daily newspaper can be reconstructed through the remaining material culture. This research can be input for the newspaper industry in Indonesia to pay more attention to, maintain and care for the remains of machines and equipment that are no longer in use because there are developments that need to be conveyed regarding the technology and process of producing newspapers for the younger generation in the future. In addition, this study can be an opportunity for the birth of industrial archeology research in other sectors."

"The archaeology of Atlantic slavery has been widely studied in recent years, but less attention has been paid to the post-slavery system of indenture that transported contract labourers from South Asia, China and Africa to new lands. Colonial Mauritius has left abundant archaeological remains, not least the cemetery for slaves and freed slaves established at Le Morne in the nineteenth century. Analysis of aDNA has demonstrated that individuals buried at Le Morne were of Madagascan and East African (probably Mozambican) origin, testifying to the long-distance movement of slave labour."
