""Fantasy has been an important and much-loved part of children's literature for hundreds of years, yet relatively little has been written about it. Children's Fantasy Literature traces the development of the tradition of the children's fantastic - fictions specifically written for children and fictions appropriated by them - from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century, examining the work of Lewis Carroll, L. Frank Baum, C. S. Lewis, Roald Dahl, J. K. Rowling and others from across the English-speaking world. The volume considers changing views on both the nature of the child and on the appropriateness of fantasy for the child reader, the role of children's fantasy literature in helping to develop the imagination, and its complex interactions with issues of class, politics and gender. The text analyses hundreds of works of fiction, placing each in its appropriate context within the tradition of fantasy literature"--amazon.com.

ABSTRACT
This thesis discusses the representation of Javanese power and the criticism of Javanese power practice, and the urgency of the narrative strategy in Raden Mandasia Si Pencuri Daging Sapi by Yusi Avianto Pareanom which is a reinterpretation of the story entitled "Prabu Watu-Gunung dari Negeri Giling-Wesi" in Babad Tanah Jawi text. Raden Mandasia Si Pencuri Daging Sapi is analyzed by using the theory of Stuart Hall (2003), Benedict R. O'G Anderson (1984 & 2000), and Koentjaraningrat (1984). The result of representation analysis that explores structural elements of the novel shows Gilingwesi as the most superior kingdom in the first power contest which its represents the power of Java. Gilingwesi is led by the king of Watugunung which has the three criteria of leadership, such as charisma, authority, and power in a special sense. The analysis of criticism indicates that the critique of the novel toward Javanese power practice is represented by Gilingwesi's power practice in second contestation against Gerbang Agung, a kingdom that fulfills some characteristics of Javanese power. The four components of Javanese power practice that are criticized, namely (a) wahyu and charism; (b) the centre of power and the universe; (c) tapa behavior and supranatural- power; and (d) priyayi ethics and heredity. To sum up, Raden Mandasia Si Pencuri Daging Sapi presents four criticisms of Javanese power practice, including female characters, tapa behavior, morality, and savior. The urgency of the narrative strategy is shown by Sungu Lembu as the narrator which through its witnesses and its critical view represent the power of Java and criticize the practice of Javanese power."
