Seorang arsitek bergantung pada sketsa-sketsa tangannya sebagai sebuah media untuk berdialog, media bagi proses kreatif untuk memahami dan membentuk arsitektur. Secara umum, sketsa berfungsi dalam memfasilitasi penemuan ide atau inspirasi, media komunikasi bagi pihak-pihak yang terlibat dalam proses perancangan, hingga merekam impresi atau kesan mental akan suatu objek. Sketsa adalah perwujudan fisik dari pemikiran dan ekspresi individual arsitek - karenanya bersifat unik dan personal - yang memiliki peran penting dari awal hingga akhir proyek perancangan, dari tahap konseptualisasi hingga evaluasi. Penggunaan sketsa dalam praktik arsitektur sangat terkait dengan sejarah perkembangan arsitektur itu sendiri. Dengan mempelajari sejarah penggunaan sketsa dalam tiap periode arsitektur, kita dapat melihat bahwa sketsa mengandung pemikiran dan spirit yang kemudian membentuk ideologi arsitektur.
