This study explores the construction of familiarity in urban interior. Familiarity in urban context is important as the city is often seen as something foreign to its users. When humans feel familiar with the space around them, humans will feel safe and comfortable in conducting their daily lives. In this sense, familiarity will increase the user interactions and emotions towards a place, triggering a deep sense of place by its users. Discussion of familiarity in the urban interior is relevant as familiarity is not seen as an accepted and automatic impression, but as something that is constructed through spatial elements configurations that construct the familiar cues. A collection of constructed spatial elements will form familiar cues that will affect the overall impression of familiarity. Familiarity can be present in two forms, namely functional and acquaintance familiarity. This study explores physical and non-physical elements that becomes relevant in assembling the familiar cues. Through case study of two media-based public space, this study investigates how familiarity can be developed through the existence of thresholds, unique object configuration, sensory vividness, and spatial traces that activate space and construct ambience of a familiar interior."
