"Literary translation, especially when translating literature from a culture that is vastly different from the target language culture, is complex and challenging. This study aims to find out what meaning-related translation strategies were used in the Indonesian translation of Oscar Wilde’s 1888 short story “The Happy Prince” and how those strategies affect the translation of items that contain taboo topics in the target text. This study is conducted through descriptive qualitative method, and the meaning-related strategies are compiled by Dewi & Wijaya (2021) from various authors. The study finds that in total there are 285 translation strategies used in the translation, addition being the most frequently found strategy with 148 instances found. Next, there are 56 deletions, 40 scope of meaning modulation procedures, 33 POV modulation procedures, 2 descriptive terms, 2 semantically translated idioms, and one of each for loan word, substitution, couplet, and cultural equivalent. The study also finds that the Indonesian translation, aside from two attempts of softening the theme of homosexuality, remains relatively faithful to the original. It is suggested for future researchers to analyze more English-Indonesian literature containing taboo topics in order to obtain a more thorough res.

Penerjemahan sastra merupakan hal yang kompleks dan menantang untuk dilakukan, terlebih lagi saat menerjemahkan sastra dari budaya yang sangat berbeda dari budaya bahasa sasaran. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mencari strategi penerjemahan berkaitan dengan makna apa yang digunakan dalam terjemahan Bahasa Indonesia dari cerita pendek Oscar Wilde yang berjudul “The Happy Prince”, juga bagaimana strategi-strategi tersebut mempengaruhi penerjemahan bagian yang mengandung tema tabu di teks sasaran. Studi ini dilakukan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dan strategi penerjemahan yang disusun oleh Dewi & Wijaya (2021) dari beragam penulis. Studi ini menemukan bahwa ada 285 strategi penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam terjemahan “The Happy Prince”, dengan penambahan sebagai strategi terbanyak, diikuti dengan penghapusan, modulasi cakupan makna, modulasi sudut pandang, penerjemahan deskriptif, penerjemahan idiom secara semantis, loan word, penggantian, penerjemahan gabungan dua prosedur, dan padanan kultural. Studi ini juga menemukan bahwa terjemahan Indonesia cerita pendek ini, selain dari dua terjemahan yang menghaluskan tema homoseksualitas yang terkandung di dalamnya, diterjemahkan dengan cukup setia dengan teks sumbernya. Agar hasil menjadi lebih lengkap, studi ini menyarankan pada peneliti-peneliti selanjutnya untuk mempelajari lebih tentang terjemahan karya sastra Inggris-Indonesia lainnya yang mengandung tema tabu."
