"ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menghasilkan silabus kursus bahasa Inggris bagipemandu Diorama Sejarah Perjalanan Bangsa di lingkungan Arsip NasionalRepublik Indonesia. Penelitian ini berpusat pada pemelajar dan menggunakanancangan kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Ancangan kualitatif digunakan untukmengidentifikasi kebutuhan komunikatif dan mendeskripsikan silabus yang tepatguna berdasarkan analisis kebutuhan yang diperoleh melalui hasil wawancara,sedangkan ancangan kuantitatif digunakan untuk menganalisis data yangdiperoleh dari kuesioner dan dari tes kemahiran berbahasa Inggris. Hasilkuesioner digunakan untuk menyusun profil calon pemelajar. Hasil wawancaradigunakan untuk memperoleh data tentang kebutuhan bahasa Inggris pemelajar.Analisis kebutuhan yang diterapkan meliputi situasi kini dan analisis situasisasaran. Silabus yang dirancang memuat tugas, keterampilan, sasaran, dan fungsikomunikatif. Silabus yang dihasilkan digunakan sebagai acuan kursus bahasaInggris pemandu Diorama Sejarah Perjalanan Bangsa di lingkungan ArsipNasional Republik Indonesia.

AbstractThis research is conducted to produce English course syllabus for diorama guideof the Nation?s Journey History at Arsip Nasional Republik Indonesia. Theresearch is focused on learners and it is a qualitative and quantitative research.The qualitative research is used for identifying the communicative needs anddescribing the suitable syllabus based on needs analysis which is obtained frominterviews, meanwhile the quantitative research is used for analyzing dataobtained from the questionnaires and English proficiency test. The results ofquestionnaires are used to create profile of the learners. The results of interviewsare used to get English needs of the learners. Present situation analysis and targetsituation analysis are needs analysis applied for this research. Syllabus producedcontains tasks, language skills, goals, targets, and communicative functions. Itwill be used as guidance of special English course for diorama guide of theNation?s Journey History at Arsip Nasional Republik Indonesia."

"The objectives of this research are to find the relationship between language attitude and self-concept with English writing ability and to describe the language attitude, self-concept, and English writing ability based on social factors such as gender, ethnicity, and college background. The survey was conducted at five universities/colleges in Jakarta.

There are three approaches used in this research. sociolinguistic, psychological, and language teaching approaches. The collecting data technique applied in this research was randomly purposive sampling. Questionnaires are used to obtain the language attitude and self-concept data. Writing tests are conducted to get the writing ability scores. The obtained writing scores are the mean provided by two qualified writing raters. All data in the form of numbers are statistically analyzed by computer using SPPS (Slalislical Packages./or Social Studies) 1 1.0 for windows by using parametric and nonparametric tests such as Pearson Product Moment, Regression, Anova, T-testnd Kruskal-Wallis H.

The study reveals that there are positive relationships between:

(1) attitude toward English and English writing ability;

(2) self-concept and English writing ability; and

(3) attitude toward English and self-concept with English writing ability.

The study also proves that:

(4) except for the kind of work that needs English, the social variables such as gender, ethnicity, college background do not seem to contribute to the attitude toward English;

(5) the social variables do not seem to contribute to the writing self-concept; and

"This research has the aims to describe the students' motivation in learning English as a foreign language and to prove whether motivation influences students' achievement. The researcher replicates motivational construction from Tremblay and Gardner (1995) with some adaptation to the social environment of learners. In this construction, language attitude is determined as a factor to arise motivation. Motivation is divided into motivational antecedent and motivational behavior. This research has three variables: language attitude as an independent variable; motivational antecedent and motivational behavior as a mediating variable; and students' learning achievement as a dependent variable. The subjects consist of ninety-nine participants of Lembaga Bahasa LIA Afiliasi Bandar Lampung, one of the private English courses in Bandar Lampung. Questioners are distributed for collecting the data of motivation and the English test is used for students ' achievement. The data are analyzed in two ways: the simple profile model and the causal model. The simple profile model shows that students' motivation stresses more on instrumental rather than integrative.
