ABSTRACT
Smart building concept is an implementation of technology developed in construction industry throughout the world, but yet to be implemented in Indonesia due to perception about the higher initial cost than the conventional one.
The objective of this research is to develop the conceptual design of building with intelligent building concept using value engineering approach in order to obtain added value in terms of quality, efficiency, and innovation regarding to its economic value. Questionnaire, value engineering study, and life cycle cost analysis are done to achieve that objective.
The result of this research shows that functions in building can be improved being intelligent through the technology innovation, hence it is able to add value and efficiency to its life cycle costing at about 38% compared to conventional building.

Facade is an important element that regulates the flow of energy in buildings. Adaptive facades are needed for their ability to provide flexibility in terms of energy flow and for their responses to dynamic external conditions thus help achieve thermal comfort in buildings leading to the impact on energy use. Adaptive facades can be achieved with several strategies, one of which is the use of smart materials, namely materials that are able to respond to changes of certain energy fields by changing their properties. This thesis aims to assess the potential of smart materials for building facades and their applications in forming adaptive facades to identify their impact on energy consumption, especially for space cooling. To do so, energy simulations are carried out with the output of Energy Use Intensity (EUI) value on buildings. This simulation is conducted on a chosen building with existing facades and with variations of facades modification using smart materials; PV and PCM. EUI results between facades are then compared to assess the impact of each facades on energy consumption. In addition, the obtained EUI values are also compared with standards to assess the categories of energy use that can be achieved by the building. The simulation results show that there is no reduction in energy consumption in the modification of facades made of smart materials when compared to the use of the existing facade. In contrast, several variations of façades made of PV and PCM smart materials show an increase in indoor solar heat gain and building energy consumption, especially for space cooling purposes. Even so, buildings with smart material facade variations can still be categorized as energy efficient buildings according to energy use standards in Indonesia."

"Smart Material Systems: Model Development describes several novel applications currently under investigation that exploit the unique actuator and sensor capabilities of smart material compounds. In addition to present and projected applications, this book provides comprehensive coverage of both linear and nonlinear modeling techniques necessary to characterize materials in a manner that facilitates transducer design and control development. The author focuses on ferroelectric, magnetic, and shape memory compounds and also addresses applications exploiting amorphous and ionic polymers, magnetorheological compounds, and fiber optic sensors.
Three classes of nonlinear models are discussed, all of which provide unified characterization frameworks for the broad class of combined compounds. An extensive discussion of structural models based on linear and nonlinear constitutive models is included, as is a chapter on numerical techniques for approximating solutions to the structural systems. The author also provides a synergistic treatment of material characterization, including significant discussion of the physics underlying nonlinear behavior, the development of nonlinear constitutive relations, the development of system models based on these constitutive relations, and the formulation of numerical techniques for approximating solutions to the resulting system models. To aid the understanding of both mathematical and physical terminology, an extensive glossary of terms is provided in an appendix. Furthermore, MATLAB software for representative models is provided at an accompanying website."
