"Natural fiber-reinforced composites have the potential to replace synthetic composites, leading to less expensive, stronger and more environmentally-friendly materials. This book provides a detailed review on how a broad range of biofibers can be used as reinforcements in composites and assesses their overall performance.
The book is divided into five major parts according to the origins of the different biofibers. Part I contains chapters on bast fibers, part II leaf fibers, part III seed fibers, part IV grass, reed and cane fibers, and finally part V covers wood, cellulosic and other fibers including cellulosic nanofibers. Each chapter reviews a specific type of biofiber providing detailed information on the sources of each fiber, their cultivation, how to process and prepare them, and how to integrate them into composite materials. The chapters outline current and potential applications for each fiber and discuss their main strengths and weaknesses.

"Pada penelitian ini akan dibuat material komposit aluminium dengan penguat Al2O3. Material ini mempunyai kekuatan tinggi dan ringan yang nantinya akan digunakan sebagai material alternatif untuk pipa tanpa sambungan. Metode pembuatan pipa tanpa sambungan ini melalui proses Stir Casting dan Centrifugal Casting.
Dari hasil penelitian, menunjukkan bahwa dengan penambahan penguat Al2O3 akan meningkatkan sifat mekanik komposit. Nilai kekerasan meningkat seiring dengan penambahan penguat. Pengaruh dari variabel proses pada penelitian ini di analisa dengan pengamatan struktur mikro, SEM-EDX.
Dari hasil pengamatan terlihat bahwa munculnya fasa baru MgO dan MgAl2O4 akan meningkatkan wettability dan sifat mekanik komposit. Nilai porositas dan nilai kekerasan komposit akan meningkat akibat pengaruh dari %Vf Al2O3 dan %wt Mg. Nilai kekerasan tertinggi dicapai sebesar 54HRB pada 20% Vf Al2O3.
Dari hasil penelitian komposit aluminum dengan penguat partikel keramik diperoleh suatu desain material komposit yang mempunyai sifat mekanik yang unggul, seperti kekuatan, kekerasan dan tahan temperatur tinggi serta ringan. Sehingga dari hasil penelitian ini dapat diaplikasikan untuk bahan alternatif material pipa tanpa sambungan yang awalnya berbahan baja untuk diganti dengan komposit Al/Al2O3.

In this study will be made of aluminum composite material with Al2O3 reinforcement. This material has high strength and light weight which will be used as an alternative material for seamless pipe. Method for making seamless pipe through the process of Stir Casting and Centrifugal Casting.
From the results of the study, indicate that the addition of Al2O3 reinforcement will improve the mechanical properties of the composite. Hardness value increases with the addition of reinforcement. Influence of process variables in this study analyzed the microstructure observation, SEM-EDX.
From the observation seen that advent of a new phase of MgO and MgAl2O4 will increase the wettability and mechanical properties of the composite. Porosity value and the value of the composite hardness will increase due to the influence of % Vt Al2O3. The highest hardness values reached in 54 HRB of 20%Vf Al2O3.
From the research of composite aluminum with ceramic particles reinforcement obtained a composite material design which has superior mechanical properties, such as strength, hardness and high temperature resistant and lightweight. So that the results of this study can be applied to alternative materials seamless pipe material which was originally made of steel to be replaced with a composite Al/ Al2O3.

"Water permeability of plain and fiber reinforced concrete was measured with and without and applied compressive stress. For the measurement of permeability under stress , a novel test technique was developed, in this technique , two hollow core concrete cylinders were simultaneously tested -one with stress and the other without using indentical flow conditions. A special design of the permeability cell eliminates leakage and allows the specimen to achieve conditions of flow equilibrium early in the test. For the stressed specimens , two levels of the applied stress , 0.3 Fu and 0.5 fu where fu is the ultimate strength of concrete in compression were investigated. A collated cellulose fiber at volume fractions of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5% was used.
Results indicated that in the unstressed state, fiber reinforcement reduces the permeability of concrete. For the stressed concrete on the other hand, and interesting phenomenon was observed. Initially as the applied stress was increased , a reduction in the permeability for both plain and fiber reinforced concrete was observed. This reduction, however , occurred only to a certain threshold value of stress . Beyond this threshold, a rapid increase in the permeability occurred for plain concrete. For fiber reinforced concrete as well, an increase in the permeability was noticed beyond the threshold value of stress, but the permeability still remained below the unstressed level."
