"This publication is the first outcome of the cooperative atĀ tempts between the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) and the University of Hasanuddin (UNHAS) to study the languages of South and Central Sulawesi.
From this book it is apparent that there are many languages and dialects in Central Sulawesi. These languages and dialects reflect the diverse elements of Indonesian culture that need to be studied and preserved for the development of the Indonesian national culture. The development of bahasa Indonesia, both as a national language and as a scientific language, will gain greatly from the study of the languages and dialects of the entire ArchiĀpelago. There are indications that these languages and dialects will disappear from daily usage, owing to the inevitable rapid dissemination of the constitutionally prescribed national language The documentation of these languages and dialects, therefore, is very important and needs instant action.
It can be said, in fact, that the study of the languages and dialects in this Archipelago cannot be separated from the implementation of the Three Main Functions of the Indonesian Universities (Tridharma Universitas) and the implementation of the Third Five-Year Development Plan (Rencana Pembangunan Lima Tahun III) which is presently being carried out by the Government of Indonesia. "This paper examines the hypothetical links between the languages of Japan and the languages of ASEAN countries and beyond. The common belief is that the Japanese languages are excluded from the ASEAN languages, but this paper attempts to hypothesize that the Ainu language of Japan belongs to the Austronesian stocks. Therefore several hypotheses are proposed to account for the possible links between the Ainu and the Japanese language and the languages of ASEAN countries and beyond. Basically there are two routes in which the languages of Japan received the influence in the early stage of developments. There is the northern route, which originates from the Altaic source and the southern route, from the Southeast Asian languages mainly the Austronesian language family. It is concluded that the languages of Japan received the influence from both the northern and southern routes plus some other countries."

"Singularity theory is a far-reaching extension of maxima and minima investigations of differentiable functions, with implications for many different areas of mathematics, engineering (catastrophe theory and the theory of bifurcations), and science. The three parts of this first volume of a two-volume set deal with the stability problem for smooth mappings, critical points of smooth functions, and caustics and wave front singularities. The second volume describes the topological and algebro-geometrical aspects of the theory, monodromy, intersection forms, oscillatory integrals, asymptotics, and mixed Hodge structures of singularities."
