How to best manage moving water in times of increasing demand for electricity as well as environmental services. How should decisions be made between water use for electricity generation or for environmental and recreational benefits. The authors develop a simple general equilibrium model of a small open economy which is used to derive a cost-benefit rule that can be used to assess projects that divert water from electricity generation to recreational and other uses (or vice versa). The cost-benefit rule is then applied to the specific case of a proposed change at a Swedish hydropower plant. "This study aims to develop a seawater distiller that can be used to purify water by using electrical energy to power the heating elements used in the condensation phase of distillation. Varying numbers of water heating elements and water levels in the evaporator unit were analyzed to determine the ideal device configuration. The distillation device consisted of a container unit, a water level control unit, and an evaporation chamber unit. Distillation was conducted in two experiments, one with a water level of 8 cm and the other, 4 cm, in the evaporation unit. Each experiment comprised eight tests, in which 1–6 water heating elements were used in various configurations; identical configurations were used in both experiments. The seawater used was obtained from the Indian Ocean off Balekambang Beach, Malang Regency, Indonesia. The largest purified water volume obtained among the 16 experimental conditions was 3.94 L at a cost of IDR 790 per liter. The effectiveness percentage toward water quality improvement in terms of pH, electrical conductivity, TDS, and maximum salinity was 9.88%, 99.98%, 99.96%, and 100%, respectively. In the future, a full-scale experiment will be conducted on site. The use of this device will therefore benefit people in areas with water scarcity."

"Environmental sustainability and poverty are some of the most important targets in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. However, the relationship between employment and forestry development is unclear, especially when it comes to illegal logging. This study aims to generate projections for forestry and other land use in Indonesia and develop policy scenarios to decrease unemployment and improve environmental sustainability by examining natural forests, logging, forest plantations, ivood-based industries and trade. The study observes the components of natural forest, logging, forest plantation, wood-based industries and trade. The study uses systems dynamic to implement a model of interaction among forest structure industries, actors and their institutions. The study finds that the current practice of forest management will experience growth in employment before it collapses, starting with Riau followed by East Kalimantan and Papua. Massive forest planting will benefit deforested land, but may jeopardize employment and livelihood in community land. Land tenure reform can boost the employment to meet the overall government target on unemployment level of 5.11% in year 2009."
