"Using the case study of the Kadazan of Sabah, a region in the Malaysian section of Borneo, this book examines national, ethnic and local identities in post-colonial states. It shows the importance of the connection between lived experience and identity and belonging, and by doing so, provides a deeper and fuller explanation of the apparently contradictory conflict between different collective forms of identification and the way in which they are employed in reference to everyday situations. Based on ethnographic fieldwork and historical analysis, the book reconstructs the development of the cultural forms and labels associated with the collective identities studies. The author employs an approach that sees collective identification as an expression of everyday practices and that stresses the importance of participation and familiarity between forms of identification and lived experience. In this context, he considers anthropological debates about state-minorities relations and issues of 'dignity' and 'respect'. Explaining state-minority relations in Malaysia and more generally in other post-colonial realities, the insights presented are highly relevant to other cases of conflicting allegiances and identity politics in settings of post-colonial nation-building"

Matchinske, Megan
"The period from the Reformation to the English Civil War saw an evolving understanding of social identity in England. This book uses four illuminating case studies to chart a discursive shift from mid-sixteenth-century notions of an individually generated, spiritually motivated sense of identity, to Civil War perceptions of the self as inscribed by the state and inflected according to gender, a site of civil and sexual invigilation and control. Each centres on the work of an early modern woman writer in the act of self-definition and authorization, in relation to external powers such as the Church and the monarchy. Megan Matchinske's study illustrates the evolving relationships between public and private selves and the increasing role of gender in determining different identities for men and women. The conjunction of gender and statehood in Matchinske's analysis represents an original contribution to the study of early modern identity."

Masing-masing tokoh utama dalam kedua film merepresentasikan bagaimana identitas diaspora Tionghoa berada dalam kondisi “being” dan “becoming” dalam konteks konsep identitas dari Stuart Hall, yaitu identitas adalah a matter of “becoming” as well as of “being”.
This research is about the representation of the Chinese diaspora‟s identity in two different films, The Journey (Malaysia) and Ngenest (Indonesia). Since the late 1920s, when the cinema has just started to be introduced in both countries, the contributions of the Chinese diaspora has been very significant. However, from the late 1960s to 2000, there has been a decline in the participation of the Chinese diaspora in the cinema which results in the decline of Chinese-themed films. This phenomenon was a result of the two countries' political policies towards the Chinese diaspora. It was only after the 2000s, along with political changes in Indonesia and the availability of technology in filmmaking in Malaysia, that Chinese-themed films returned to both countries. The Journey (2014) and Ngenest (2015) were produced in the post-2010s era, and were directed by the Chinese diaspora. Using qualitative methods, this research conducts an in-depth analysis of the elements of the two films, which are the narrative elements and cinematic elements. Stuart Hall's concept of representation and identity was used as a theoretical framework to understand the representation of Chinese diaspora identity in the two films from these two countries. The findings of this study are that both films represent the followings: 1) tradition is part of the identity marker of the Chinese diaspora; 2) the dynamics of identity in the form of tension between tradition and modernity (The Journey) and between Chinese and discriminatory views against it (Ngenest); 3) the absence of relations with China as a country politically. However, there were differences in how those things were represented. The different representations were related with the differences in terms of social, cultural, and identity politics of the Chinese diaspora in both countries. Using Stuart Hall‟s concept of identity, it can be seen that each of the main characters in both films represents how the identity of the Chinese diaspora is in a state of "being" and "becoming"."

This study aims to analyze the Eid kupatan tradition brought by the Javanese Muslim diaspora to Malaysia. The Kupatan tradition is a tradition that existed among Javanese Muslims which was introduced by Sunan Kalijaga during the Demak Kingdom for the Islamization process at that time. The Kupatan tradition is carried out seven days after Eid al-Fitr, in Javanese, ketupat or kupat is interpreted as "Jharwa dhosok" which also means "admit Lepat" that is, one must be able to apologize when one makes a mistake. In the kupatan tradition, ketupat is the main dish, a rice-based ketupat wrapped in janur or young coconut leaves in a rectangular shape. The presence of the kupatan tradition in Malaysia was brought about by the Javanese Muslim diaspora community, the local Malaysian community accepted the kupatan tradition because they have several similarities in tradition, such as language, culture and religion, therefore the kupatan tradition was well received and produced positive values for Malaysian local community. In its development, the Javanese Muslim Eid kupatan tradition in the Javanese Muslim diaspora has acculturated, but does not change essential things or the meaning of the tradition, it is evident that the purpose of holding the Eid Kupatan tradition is still in accordance with the original meaning and purpose. The tradition of Eid kupatan for the Javanese Muslim diaspora in Malaysia has become a separate identity for the Javanese Muslim diaspora, because other Muslim diaspora communities do not do that, and have different characteristics. The author takes a case study of the Eid kupatan tradition in the Javanese Muslim diaspora in Malaysia to find out how this tradition has acculturated and to what extent this tradition has become an identity for the Javanese Muslim diaspora in Malaysia. The author uses qualitative research methods, with library data sources. The concept used is cultural acculturation and cultural identity."
