"Integration of immigrants and their descendants has been a socially sensitive and a politically pressing issue in Germany, particularly in recent decades. Being the largest immigrant group in the country, and for a number of other reasons, the spotlight has been on people of Turkish descent. From a sociological perspective, the process of identity formation is a critical step in the direction of integration. If immigrants of Turkish descent are to be integrated in the society, it is crucial to inquire how they conceive of themselves, and perceive how they are conceived by the so-called locals. Heeding Goethe, Ali Mehdi conduct in-depth interviews with seven young men of Turkish descent, born in Germany, and to analyze, utilizing the empathetic approach of the German hermeneutic tradition, the rich diversity of identity strategies that the interviewees employ."

Koroglu, Erol
"This is the first work to deal with the role of literature and propaganda in Turkey during World War I...The author charts the efforts of the Young Turk government and its German allies to build up a propaganda apparatus. He also shows how the literature of the war years (both poetry and prose) not only tried to bolster patriotism but also was instrumental in the building of a new, Turkish, nationhood. In his description, he shows how the different writers of the period represented different interpretations of the idea of a Turkish nation. The work is not only an important contribution to our understanding of the Ottoman Empire during World War I, it also adds a completely new chapter to the study of World War I literature. For the many readers interested in World War I literature, who are familiar with the writings of British, French, German and American writers, this will open up new vistas. Koroglu is a meticulous researcher, intimately familiar with his subject, who is able to convey a good "feel" for the atmosphere of the period.'- Professor Erik Jan Zurcher, University of Leiden 'Dr. Koroglu's book displays and explains the need to change the attitudes of these two fields in order to reach a more productive and persuasive understanding of literature and history. His elegant and well-documented interdisciplinary approach, which also tackles disciplinary conventions and methodologies of literature and history at the same time, establishes a positive model for future studies in a new literary cultural history approach...this book offers a totally new and telling explanation and understanding of the literature of the late Ottoman period under the impact of the newly emerging Turkish nationalist ideology.'- Professor Nuket Esen, Bogazici University, Istanbul."

"Abstract:
Most analysts agree that Turkey's foreign policy is essentially peaceful, using diplomacy and multilateralism in the resolution of its conflicts with other states. Here, Umut Uzer offers a necessary corrective to this standard analysis by revealing the Kemalist influence in Turkey's state ideology. This defined the identity of the state as Turkish, resulting in responsibilities towards Turks residing beyond its borders, and a more engaged foreign policy that ranged from declarations of support for ethnic kin outside Turkey to outright takeover of territory."

"After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923, and the new regime aimed to construct a national identity through a series of reforms. Among them, one statesponsored project was culturally significant: the Turkish Language Reform. Two institutions, the Turkish Historical Society and the Turkish Linguistic Society, helped to legitimize the language reform and construct a new cultural identity for the citizens of the new nationstate. The Turkish Language Reform, arguably the most radical of all reforms, has been a successful component of the republican social engineering project. This paper examines the centrality of the language issue in the nationbuilding effort and the role of the two abovementioned institutions in the process. The Turkish Language Reform remains one of the most effective state interventions on language. The present paper explores the reasons behind the reforms success and the importance of language as a marker of national identity."

Tengger people are interesting to study because they are different from other communities living in the East Java Province. Tengger people are those who are very obedient in carrying out traditional ceremonies and highly uphold honesty. The research problem in  this dissertation is those who are of Madurese descent prefer their main identity as Tengger people. The data collection used the observation method involved and in-depth interviews. The results of the study concluded that the "ethnic boundary" of Tengger people are to have attributes such as sarong, Tengger language, farming community, and obediently carrying out traditional ceremonies. Tengger people are those who live in the Tengger region, are hard-working, egalitarian, peace-loving and always do good, obey the leader and obey the customary rules, maintain family ties and are close to the spirit world. Those who are of Madurese descent eventually carry out the process of 'becoming Tengger' to get various accesses because only Tengger people have the legitimacy to obtain such access. Accesses obtained are access to social identity, market access, access to capital, access to knowledge, access through negotiations from other social relations, access to a better life and also include access to authority for original Tengger people. The Tengger's strong efforts to maintain 'ethnic boundary' resulted in a social construction that depicted the Tengger region as a sacred area that only certain people could live in and is a safe and peaceful place, which then ultimately give Tengger people full autonomy to manage their territory with minimal intervention from outside parties.

The Republic of Turkey, born on the ruins of the Ottoman Caliphate, was built through nationalism that was not only at odds with its predecessors, but also contained a destructive force against the structure of the Caliphate as well as a constructive force for the character of the new Turkish nation. This study reviews how nationalism in Turkey, which is often considered to be at odds with the values of the Caliphate, is in fact a synthesis of the memory of the glory of the Caliphate, Islamic values, and the spirit of Western nationalism. Using the library study method, this study examines various sources of literature to explain the dynamics of the emergence and development of nationalism in the Ottoman Turkish region during the Tanzimat era, to its role in shaping the identity of the Republic of Turkey. The results of this study show that Turkish nationalism is not only a breaker of the continuity of the Caliphate, but also a foundation for the formation of a modern Turkish identity that still reflects the historical heritage and Islamic values."
