"Minyak sawit kasar mengandung tokoferol dan tokotrienol yang merupakan senyawa dari vitamin E. Proses pemurnian minyak sawit menyebabkan tokoferol dan tokotrienol menghilang. Vitamin E berfungsi sebagai antioksidan dan dapat menjadi produk samping industri sawit. Isomer dari tokoferol yang mempunyai aktivitas terbesar adalah α-tokoferol. Salah satu cara pemisahan α-tokoferol dari minyak sawit kasar adalah dengan ekstraksi cair-cair. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mendapatkan data kesetimbangan cair-cair sistem minyak sawit kasar + α-tokoferol + isopropanol serta melihat kinerja pelarut yang dipilih sehingga akan berguna untuk perancangan alat ekstraksi. Metode yang digunakan adalah mencampur dan mengendapkan larutan hingga mencapai keadaan yang setimbang kemudian dianalisis fraksi massa tiap komponen pada fase ekstrak dan rafinat untuk rasio massa pelarut yang berbeda-beda. Pada penelitian ini didapat data kesetimbangan cair-cair pada rasio massa minyak sawit kasar dibanding isopropanol sebesar 1:0,2; 1;0,4; dan 1:0,6. Kinerja pelarut isopropanol rendah sebab koefisien distribusi dari α-tokoferol yang terbesar yaitu 0,85 dan selektivitas pelarut yang terbesar yaitu 0,89 bernilai kurang dari 1. Ekstraksi cair-cair secara langsung untuk memisahkan α-tokoferol dari minyak sawit kasar sulit dilakukan karena banyaknya fraksi cair minyak sawit yang ada pada fase ekstrak.

Crude palm oil contains tocopherols and tocotrienols which are the main compounds of vitamin E. In palm oil refining process tocopherols and tocotrienols is removed. The function of vitamin E is as an antioxidant and can be makes as side product of palm oil industry. Isomer of tocopherol that has the greatest activity is α-tocopherol. Liquid-liquid extraction is one of separation method that can be used for separation of α-tocopherol from crude palm oil. This study was conducted to obtain liquid-liquid equilibrium data for system of crude palm oil + α-tocopherol + isopropanol and to identificate performance of the selected solvent so it can be use for extractor design. The method used is mixing and settling the solution until it reach equilibrium state then analyzed the mass fraction of each component in extract and rafinat phase for different mass ratio of solvent. The liquid-liquid equilibrium data obtained is in mass ratio of crude palm oil to isopropanol at 1:0.2; 1:0.4; and 1:0.6. The performance of isopropanol is poor because the largest distribution coefficient of α-tocopherol is 0.85 and the largest solvent selectivity is 0.89 still below than unity. Using liquid-liquid extraction to directly separating α-tocopherol from crude palm oil is hard to do because a lot of liquid fraction of palm oil in extract phase."
