"Eceng gondok (Eichhornia crassipes) merupakan gulma perairan karena mengganggu ekosistem air. Untuk mengurangi dampak negatif yang ditimbulkan berbagai upaya dilakukan salah satunya dengan pembuatan Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC). Potensi eceng gondok menjadi CMC cukup besar karena kandungan selulosanya yang cukup tinggi. Proses pembuatan CMC ini diawali dengan isolasi selulosa eceng gondok kemudian mereaksikannya dengan NaOH pada berbagai variasi konsentrasi 10% dan 35% dan ClCH2COONa dalam suatu media reaksi. Pada penelitian ini digunakan campuran pelarut isopropanol-isobutanol sebagai media reaksi dengan variasi komposisi 20:80. 40:60, 50:50, 60:40, 80:20. Dari penelitian diperoleh CMC dengan kondisi optimum pada konsentrasi NaOH 10% dengan kemurnian tertinggi 90,9% pada komposisi alkohol 80:20 dan viskositas tertinggi 157,5 cP pada komposisi alkohol 50:50.

Water hyacinth is one of aquatic weeds because its disturb aquatic ecosystem. Many efforts were made to reduce the negative impact of these plants, which one of them with manufacturing of Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC). Water hyacinth has high potential to be CMC because it cellulose content is very high. CMC manufacture process start with cellulose isolation and reacting it cellulose with NaOH and NaMCA in isopropanol-isobutanol as reaction medium. Experiment variation are NaOH concentration at 10% and 35% w/v and isopropanol-isobutanol composition at 20:80, 40:60, 50:50, 60:40, and 80:20. From this experiment, optimum condition of CMC production is 10% w/v NaOH concentration with maximum viscosity 157,5 cP at 80:20 alcohol composition and maximum purity 90,9% at 50:50 alcohol composition."
