"Detailed descriptions on biological activities, tissue and/or subcellular distribution, molecular structure, gene organization, possible functions, clinical applications, lectin-ligand interactions and their intervention for therapeutic purposes are provided. The recently discovered C-type lectins as well as further novel super-families of this group of molecules are described in detail. Furthermore, the clinical significance of animal lectins in inflammatory diseases, defects of immune defense and autoimmunity are described and their application as drugs and therapeutic targets is discussed. "The present book collects the contributions from the meeting, mixing styles, arguments, topics, history and philosophy of science, modern biology and epistemology . This kind of inter-disciplinary approach may appear erratic, but it conveys flashes of lights on the changing scene where the theory of evolution plays. This is in line with the idea to reopen the file of the two cultures, looking at shared problems, which are not yet really the third culture invoked by Charles Percy Snow half a century ago, but they can foster it, at least in such a pivotal domain as evolution.

Palm oil fatty acid-sucrose can be synthesized via enzymatic esterification using Candida rugosa lipase. The solvents used in this study were isoamyl alcohol and isobutanol. Esterification reaction was carried out enzymatically using free lipase and immobilized Candida rugosa lipase E.C. 3.1.1.3 on Fe3O4-chitosan nanoparticles. The immobilized lipase were examined to determine the loading percentage and the hydrolytic activity. The loading percentage obtained while using 200 ppm lipase for immobilization was 31,4%, with hydrolytic activity of immobilized lipase was 3,47 U/mL, the specific activity of 0,99 U/mg and the immobilization efficiency of 23,25%. Meanwhile by using 350 ppm lipase the loading percentage obtained was 64,4% with hydrolytic activity of 2,25 U/mL, the specific activity of 0,64 U/mg and the immobilization efficiency of 14,8 %. From this optimization study of esterification, the highest conversion came from sugar and fatty acid ratio 1 : 90. The esterification product gave positive test on emulsifier test. The best solvent to synthesize ester-sucrose using immobilized lipase is isobutanol."

"This book is the first devoted entirely to complex I. It contains chapters written by leaders in the field, covering a wide range of topics from the structure of the complex, properties of its many redox centers, subunit composition, mutagenesis studies, evolution of the enzyme and on to the current understanding of the coupling mechanism and the molecular basis for human pathologies. Features, concise and authoritative review of current state-of-the-art in research on respiratory complex I. The first book, a central enzyme in bioenergetics. Recent breakthroughs in structure elucidation finally allow understanding of the mechanism. Mutations leading to common and severe human disorders are discussed."

"This textbook provides a collection of case studies in paleoanthropology demonstrating the method and limitations of science. These cases introduce the reader to various problems and illustrate how they have been addressed historically.  The various topics selected represent important corrections in the field, some critical breakthroughs, models of good reasoning and experimental design, and important ideas emerging from normal science.

"This book synthesizes current methods used to quantify functional diversity, providing step-by-step examples for defining functional groups and estimating functional indices. The authors show how to compare communities, and how to analyze changes of diversity along environmental gradients, using real-life examples throughout. One section of the book demonstrates the selection of traits, and the standardization and characterization of ecosystem data. Another section presents methods used to quantify functional diversity, shows how to relate functional diversity with environmental variables and how to connect these to ecosystem services. The concluding section introduces FDiversity, a free program developed by the authors. The reader is guided through every step from software installation and basic functions, to sample and database design, to graphical projection methods, employing case study data to illustrate key concepts."
