"This book presents the mathematical methodology for generic image analysis tasks. In the context of this book an image may be any m-dimensional empirical signal living on an n-dimensional smooth manifold. The existing literature on image methodology is rather scattered and often limited to either a deterministic or a statistical point of view. In contrast, this book brings together these seemingly different points of view in order to stress their conceptual relations and formal analogies. Furthermore, it does not focus on specific applications, although some are detailed for the sake of illustration, but on the methodological frameworks on which such applications are built. Covering many topics at the forefront of current research, including anisotropic diffusion filtering of tensor fields, this book will be of particular interest to graduate and postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of computer vision, medical imaging and visual perception.

"Since the advent of computerized tomography in radiology, many imaging techniques have been introduced in medicine, science, and technology. This book describes the state of the art of the mathematical theory and numerical analysis of imaging. The authors survey and provide a unified view of imaging techniques, provide the necessary mathematical background and common framework, and give a detailed analysis of the numerical algorithms. This book not only reflects the theoretical progress and the growth of the field in the last 10 years but also serves as an excellent reference. It will provide readers with a superior understanding of the mathematical principles behind imaging and will enable them to write state-of-the-art software as a result."

"Wavelets continue to be powerful mathematical tools that can be used to solve problems for which the Fourier (spectral) method does not perform well or cannot handle. This book is for engineers, applied mathematicians, and other scientists who want to learn about using wavelets to analyze, process, and synthesize images and signals. Applications are described in detail and there are step-by-step instructions about how to construct and apply wavelets. The only mathematically rigorous monograph written by a mathematician specifically for nonspecialists, it describes the basic concepts of these mathematical techniques, outlines the procedures for using them, compares the performance of various approaches, and provides information for problem solving, putting the reader at the forefront of current research."

"This book provides a practical guide, complete with accompanying Matlab software, to many different types of polynomial and discrete splines and spline-based wavelets, multiwavelets and wavelet frames in signal and image processing applications.
In self-contained form, it briefly outlines a broad range of polynomial and discrete splines with equidistant nodes and their signal-processing-relevant properties. In particular, interpolating, smoothing, and shift-orthogonal splines are presented. "

"This book presents a comprehensive overview of medical image analysis. Practical in approach, the text is uniquely structured by potential applications. Features : presents learning objectives, exercises and concluding remarks in each chapter, in addition to a glossary of abbreviations; describes a range of common imaging techniques, reconstruction techniques and image artefacts, discusses the archival and transfer of images, including the HL7 and DICOM standards, presents a selection of techniques for the enhancement of contrast and edges, for noise reduction and for edge-preserving smoothing, examines various feature detection and segmentation techniques, together with methods for computing a registration or normalisation transformation, explores object detection, as well as classification based on segment attributes such as shape and appearance, reviews the validation of an analysis method, includes appendices on Markov random field optimization, variational calculus and principal component analysis."
