Aust, Anthony
"This handbook is for the non-specialist in international law who needs to gain a working knowledge of its central principles and rules. It will, for example, help you to understand the differences between often-misunderstood ideas such as diplomatic vs. state immunity. In a world of overlapping legal systems created by international and national courts and tribunals, this is a practical guide to how international law is applied to other branches of law. It is written by an expert international lawyer, who uses his professional experience to focus on how the law is created by states and international organisations, and how they apply these laws to manage day-to-day problems. This new edition retains a concise, user-friendly format that will help you to grasp central principles such as jurisdiction and the law of treaties, as well as the international law of more specialised topics such as human rights, terrorism and the environment. With a background including thirty-five years as a legal adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Anthony Aust is a consultant on international law to governments, law firms and international organisations. He has also taught international law at the London School of Economics and at other universities."

"This second edition of International Environmental Law, Policy, and Ethics revises and expands this groundbreaking study into the question of why the environment is protected in the international arena. This question is rarely asked because it is assumed that each member of the international community wants to achieve the same ends. However, in his innovative study of international environmental ethics, Alexander Gillespie explodes this myth. He shows how nations, like individuals, create environmental laws and policies which are continually inviting failure, as such laws can often be riddled with inconsistencies, and be ultimately contradictory in purpose. Specifically, he seeks a nexus between the reasons why nations protect the environment, how these reasons are reflected in law and policy, and what complications arise from these choices."

"The functionalist perspective on the law relating to international organizations is being replaced by a constitutionalist perspective in light of the need to control international bureaucracies engaging in quasi-sovereign activities or violating rules of international law. For this book, editors Klabbers and Wallendahl (Center of Excellence in Global Governance Research, U. of Helsinki, Finland) bring together contributors from European countries to explore this paradigm shift and how it affects the various doctrinal issues that make up the law of international organizations. A section on general issues addresses topics such as membership and financing in international organizations, dispute settlement, and the role of the International Law Commission. A section on special issues examines areas such as ultra vires doctrine and deformalization of international organization law. Chapters on the EU and the United Nations examine the facets of constitutionalism in international organizations"

"Summary:
What is the relationship between politics and international law? Rather than exploring this question through the lens of the dominant paradigms of international relations theory - realism, liberalism and constructivism - this book proposes a different approach. Based on the premise that the relationship varies depending on the sites where it unfolds, and inspired by comparative politics and socio-legal studies, the book develops a novel framework for comparative analysis of politics and international law at different stages of governance and in different governance systems. Expert contributors apply this analytical framework to diverse fields of law and politics. Part I examines the problems of compliance, effectiveness and the domestic enforcement of international law, and legal institutions including domestic and international courts, national legislatures and regime complexes. Part II covers substantive fields of governance such as global financial regulation, environmental standards, trade, intellectual property and human rights. The final chapters in this Part tackle emerging yet critical issues in international law, including terrorism, cyber conflict and Internet regulation. Together, the chapters represent a significant step forward in the comparative analysis of politics and international law. This Research Handbook will be essential reading for students and academics in political science and law alike"
