Waxman, Jonathan
"The elephant in the room is a collection of short stories that creatively communicate the cancer patient’s journey. The stories, based on real-life accounts, are built around the idiosyncratic relationships between patients and their doctors. Using humor, empathy and wisdom, Jonathan Waxman explores the very human side of cancer as well as providing expert commentary on the clinical aspects of diagnosis and therapy of this disease. These stories comfort and entertain, inform and engage, and are a treat to read for anyone whose life has been affected by cancer."

This research mainly talks about Breaking Bad News, an activity in medical practice which may affect patients? view about their future in a negative way. Studies and research about Breaking Bad News and doctor?patient relationship have been done a lot in medical views. Yet in this research, Breaking Bad News and doctor?patient relationship will be seen in communication studies perspective with the usage of social science theory. This research finds that the process of doctor?patient communication is not merely about the patients? satisfaction or the chance of the patients to be completely healed. Doctor?patient communication contains a cost and reward relationship which happens during the process. By using qualitative method and exploratory paradigm, this research goes for a deep analysis about the position of Breaking Bad News and the components that will create a good interpersonal relationship., This research mainly talks about Breaking Bad News, an activity in medical practice which may affect patients’ view about their future in a negative way.

ABSTRACT
Background: The incidence of breast cancer in women of reproductive age in Indonesia and throughout the world today is increasing. Breast cancer therapy could damage the reproductive organs, especially ovarium, and cause infertility. One of the currently available solutions is ovarian preservation. This is an important and complex issue due to the heightened patients concern. Therefore, this study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of doctors as well as reproductive women with breast cancer regarding ovarian preservation.
Methods:A descriptive qualitative study was done on six patients and eight oncology surgeons in RSCM and RS Kanker Dharmais between July2018-November 2018. Data was gathered throughunstructured formal interview with patients and oncology surgeons. Demographic data of patients was also collected.
Results: Majority of patients admit to knowing next to nothing about fertility preservation, yet they agree to its benefits once they got a brief explanation from the doctors. They perceive this act as a solution for having an offspring though they also understand the religion and financial barriers. In conjuction with the patients, most oncology surgeons have minimal information about this field as it is not their day to day duty. They expressed an eagerness to learn about ovary preservation in seminar as it would help to answer patients concerns.
Conclusion: Patients knowledge about fertility preservation measures among cancer patients is still minimal mainly due to lack of proper educational background. Doctors attitude regarding fertility preservation issue is also heavily influenced by the success rate of the attempt. In the future, further socialization for patients about the objective of fertility preservation supported with health coverage policy are needed for the development of the preservation program. "
