"The Lanczos and conjugate gradient (CG) algorithms are fascinating numerical algorithms. This book presents the most comprehensive discussion to date of the use of these methods for computing eigenvalues and solving linear systems in both exact and floating point arithmetic. The author synthesizes the research done over the past 30 years, describing and explaining the "average" behavior of these methods and providing new insight into their properties in finite precision. Many examples are given that show significant results obtained by researchers in the field.
The author emphasizes how both algorithms can be used efficiently in finite precision arithmetic, regardless of the growth of rounding errors that occurs. He details the mathematical properties of both algorithms and demonstrates how the CG algorithm is derived from the Lanczos algorithm. Loss of orthogonality involved with using the Lanczos algorithm, ways to improve the maximum attainable accuracy of CG computations, and what modifications need to be made when the CG method is used with a preconditioner are addressed."

"Devoted to the assessment of the quality of numerical results produced by computers, this book addresses the question: How does finite precision affect the convergence of numerical methods on the computer when convergence has been proven in exact arithmetic?
Finite precision computations are at the heart of the daily activities of many engineers and researchers in all branches of applied mathematics. Written in an informal style, the book combines techniques from engineering and mathematics to describe the rigorous and novel theory of computability in finite precision. In the challenging cases of nonlinear problems, theoretical analysis is supplemented by software tools to explore the stability on the computer.
Roundoff errors are often considered negatively, as a severe limitation on the purity of exact computations. The authors show how the necessarily finite precision of the computer arithmetic can be turned into an asset to describe physical phenomena."

"First published in 1985, Lanczos Algorithms for Large Symmetric Eigenvalue Computations; Vol. I: Theory presents background material, descriptions, and supporting theory relating to practical numerical algorithms for the solution of huge eigenvalue problems. This book deals with "symmetric" problems. However, in this book, "symmetric" also encompasses numerical procedures for computing singular values and vectors of real rectangular matrices and numerical procedures for computing eigenelements of nondefective complex symmetric matrices.
Although preserving orthogonality has been the golden rule in linear algebra, most of the algorithms in this book conform to that rule only locally, resulting in markedly reduced memory requirements. Additionally, most of the algorithms discussed separate the eigenvalue (singular value) computations from the corresponding eigenvector (singular vector) computations. This separation prevents losses in accuracy that can occur in methods which, in order to be able to compute further into the spectrum, use successive implicit deflation by computed eigenvector or singular vector approximations.
This book continues to be useful to the mathematical, scientific, and engineering communities as a reservoir of information detailing the nonclassical side of Lanczos algorithms and as a presentation of what continues to be the most efficient methods for certain types of large-scale eigenvalue computations."

"This book presents the theory of periodic conjugate heat transfer in a detailed way. The effects of thermophysical properties and geometry of a solid body on the commonly used and experimentally determined heat transfer coefficient are analytically presented from a general point of view. The main objective of the book is a simplified description of the interaction between a solid body and a fluid as a boundary value problem of the heat conduction equation for the solid body. At the body surface, the true heat transfer coefficient is composed of two parts, the true mean value resulting from the solution of the steady state heat transfer problem and a periodically variable part, the periodic time and length to describe the oscillatory hydrodynamic effects. The second edition is extended by (i) the analysis of stability boundaries in helium flow at supercritical conditions in a heated channel with respect to the interaction between a solid body and a fluid, (ii) a periodic model and a method of heat transfer simulation in a fluid at supercritical pressure and (iii) a periodic quantum-mechanical model for homogeneous vapor nucleation in a fluid with respect to nanoscale effects."
