"The routine daily
activities that tend to be sedentary and repetitive may cause severe health
problems. This issue has encouraged researchers to design a system to detect
and record people activities in real time and thus encourage them to do more
physical exercise. By utilizing sensors embedded in a smartphone, many research
studies have been conducted to try to recognize user activity. The most common
sensors used for this purpose are accelerometers and gyroscopes; however, we
found out that a gravity sensor has significant potential to be utilized as
well. In this paper, we propose a novel method to recognize activities using
the combination of an accelerometer and gravity sensor. We design a simple
hierarchical system with the purpose of developing a more energy efficient
application to be implemented in smartphones. We achieved an average of 95% for
the activity recognition accuracy, and we also succeed at proving that our work
is more energy efficient compared to other works."

"The antimicrobial properties of bagasse paper sheets coated with
natural polymers (chitosan, different ratios of (gelatin/glycerol) + chitosan,
hemicellulose, hemicellulose + glycerol, hemicellulose+chitosan) or
synthetic organophosphorus dimer compounds were evaluated in this work.
Hemicelluloses showed moderate activity against Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans, while chitosan showed weak
activity against B. subtilis. The condition that offered the highest inhibitory
activity of bagasse paper was the one
coated with 1,3-diaryl-2,2,2,4,4,4-hexachlorocyclodiphosph(V)azane
(where aryl is p-chloroaniline or p-anisidine). The developed bagasse papers
were evaluated against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and fungi. The highest inhibitory activity was obtained at a concentration of 200
mg/mL for p-chloroaniline with an inhibition zone that varied for different
microbes from 6.9 mm to 26 mm. The highest inhibitory activity was obtained at
300?250 mg/mL for p-anisidine against most of the pathogenic microorganisms
with an inhibition zone that varied for different microbes from 8 mm to 14.75
mm. The observed antimicrobial and antifungal activity properties for bagasse paper coated with 1,3-diaryl
2,2,2,4,4,4-hexachlorocyclodiphosph(V)azane could be attributed to the presence of Cl, P atoms, and the lone pair of
electrons on N atoms in the structure of the dimers."

"In any heterogeneous system, porting reconfigurable computing is often a high
performance platform for a broad range of computationally challenging issues.
However, efficiently utilizing the maximum potential of these reconfigurable
systems is a difficult job without understanding their performance
characteristics. This work proposes an analytic performance model using Petri
Nets (PN) for a Reconfigurable OR1200 (ROR1200) soft-core processor with model
validation and verifications. By modeling the ROR1200 system using Petri Nets,
both behavioral and structural properties existing in parallel systems were
analyzed. The Bound Level Analysis with respect to the dependency level of data
is also performed on Soft Core Processors (SCP) like the ROR1200, the OR1200
and the MicroBlaze."

"A
vacuum drying system is being designed and developed at National Institute of
Vacuum Science & Technology (NINVAST) to dry various materials under vacuum
conditions. Its performance and capabilities are tested by carrying out
different experiments on green (freshly cut) wood samples of Poplar and
Eucalyptus with dimensions of 990.6 mm x 76.2 mm x 25.4 mm and 469.9 mm x 50.8
mm x 25.4 mm, respectively. These samples were dried from green moisture
content (MC) 78% to 10% by this system at ultimate vacuum of about 1.6 x 103
pascal and at a temperature ranging from 35oC to 55oC for
about 20 hrs. Drying quality tests included: prong test, warp measurement,
surface checking and moisture content measurement, which were all performed.
The resulting wood samples showed no dislocation and no excessive stress
buildup. If compared to ordinary drying process, the vacuum drying is rapid and
the drying rate increases with rise in temperature. The designed system is
beneficial for commercial use."

"Time synchronization is a vital process in wireless sensor networks, where energy sources are highly limited. In this work, we propose a broadcast-based skew correction technique that will improve both the accuracy and the lifetime of any time synchronization protocol that only corrects time offsets among sensor nodes. Using time information transmitted periodically by the root node, each client node can compensate its software clock frequency in real time after an initial offset correction. The experimental results show that a clock skew below 0.05 us/s can be consistently achieved with appropriate compensation parameters after the correction process is stabilized."

"The low-cost Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) consists of small battery powered devices called sensors, with limited energy capacity. Once deployed, accessibility to any sensor node for maintenance and battery replacement is not feasible due to the spatial scattering of the nodes. This will lead to an unreliable, limited lifetime and a poor connectivity network. In this paper a novel bio-inspired cluster-based deployment algorithm is proposed for energy optimization of the WSN and ultimately to improve the network lifetime. In the cluster initialization phase, a single cluster is formed with a single cluster head at the center of the sensing terrain. The second phase is for optimum cluster formation surrounding the inner cluster, based on swarming bees and a piping technique. Each cluster member distributes its data to its corresponding cluster head and the cluster head communicates with the base station, which reduces the communication distance of each node. The simulation results show that, when compared with other clustering algorithms, the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the number of clusters by 38% and improve the network lifetime by a factor of 1/4."

"We propose a simple design of 1×3 optical power splitter which uses gallium nitride (GaN) on sapphire. The design consists of widely used large cross section input rib waveguide, a rectangular multimode interference (MMI) structure, and three-branch rib waveguides. The MMI structure is selected since their attractive performances, such as compactness, low excess loss, wide bandwidth and ease to fabricate. The power splitter is designed for the third telecommunication window, i.e., l = 1.55 µm. Optimization of the geometrical structure parameters for the design is conducted theoretically utilizing 3D FD-BPM method. It is found that the power splitter exhibits excess loss of 0.46 dB and imbalanced of 0.001 dB at l = 1.55 µm for ..."
