"Globalisasi telah memberikan dampak signifikan terhadap perkembangan makna dan fungsi dari Ondel-ondel. Hal ini semakin ditunjukkan dengan maraknya praktik mengamen dan mengemis menggunakan Ondel-ondel di tengah-tengah masyarakat. Praktik pengamen dan mengemis menggunakan Ondel-ondel kemudian memunculkan berbagai kontroversi di tengah masyarakat, khususnya masyarakat Betawi, yang dianggap menyinggung nilai-nilai budaya dan identitas Betawi. Penelitian dilakukan menggunakan metode etnografi, dengan proses observasi lapangan, pengumpulan data sekunder, dan wawancara mendalam kepada sembilan informan yang terdiri dari tiga pengamen/pengemis Ondel-ondel, empat pengrajin/sanggar Betawi, dan Tokoh Betawi yang berlokasi di DKI Jakarta dan Kota Bekasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat keberagaman latar belakang dan pengalaman pada penggiat budaya Ondel-ondel seperti perbedaan keturunan, pendidikan, lingkungan, yang selanjutnya mempengaruhi pilihan praktik yang mereka lakukan dan hayati. Perbedaan pengalaman, dan penghayatan tersebut berdampak terhadap pilihan praktik-praktik yang dilakukan, seperti pertunjukkan Ondel-ondel di acara-acara resmi, membuat dan menjual Ondel-ondel, mengamen, dan mengemis menggunakan Ondel-ondel. Penggiat budaya Ondel-ondel dapat mengidentifikasi dan memahami praktik-praktik yang mereka lakukan sebagai upaya untuk melestarikan budaya, atau hanya sebatas memenuhi kebutuhan ekonomi. Melalui penelitian ini juga dapat diketahui bahwa lanskap masyarakat pada saat ini semakin kosmopolitan, yang juga turut mempengaruhi keberagaman praktik-praktik dalam budaya Ondel-ondel.

Globalization has had a significant impact on the development of the meaning and function of Ondel-ondel. These are shown by the widespread practice of busking and begging using Ondel-ondel in the community. The practiced of busking and begging using Ondel-ondel then led to various controversies in the community, especially the Betawi community, which were considered to offend Betawi cultural values and identity. This research used ethnographic methods, with a field observation process, secondary data collection, and in-depth interviews with nine informants consisting of three Ondel- ondel buskers/beggars, four Betawi artist/sanggar, and Betawi figures located in DKI Jakarta and Bekasi City. The results show that there are various backgrounds and experiences of Ondel-ondel cultural activists such as differences in heredity, education, and environment, which further influences the choice of practice they do and live. Differences in experience and appreciation have an effect on the choice of practiced that are carried out, such as Ondel-ondel performances at official events, making and selling Ondel-ondel, busking, and begging using Ondel-ondel. Ondel-ondel cultural activists can identify and understand the practices they carry out as an effort to preserve culture or only to meet economic needs. Through this research, also be known that the current landscape of society is increasingly cosmopolitan, which also influences the diversity of practices in Ondel-ondel culture."
