"Tulisan ini mengkaji sikap penduduk desa -yang tinggal di suatu kampung di Yogyakarta-terhadap dakwah, dan bagaimana aktivitas-aktivitas penyebaran agama dimanifestasikan dalam kehidupan di desa. Penduduk desa ternyata enggan untuk menggunakan cara-cara langsung dalam melaksanakan dakwah, seperti mengunjungi penduduk desa yang tidak aktif guna mempengaruhinya untuk berpartisipasi dalam aktivitas keagamaan, dan menyarankan mereka untuk tidak melaksanakan perbuatan terlarang. Sebaliknya, merekacenderung untuk memberikan contoh melalui tingkah laku. Metode-metode dakwah yang toleran dan tidak bersifat langsung yang dikembangkan oleh Muhammadiyah, tidak adanya tokoh-tokoh agama yang otoriter, serta adanya norma-norma yang secara dominan melarang keterlibatan mereka dalam kehidupan orang lain, telah menunjang pembentukan sikap tersebut. Sikap ini memungkinkan dipertahankannya keharmonisan beragama, dan tidakmenyebabkan timbulnya tekanan dan perpecahan sosial sebagai akibat dari perbedaan agama. Tetapi, dengan kurangnya kesempatan untuk memperkecil perbedaan agama, perbedaan-perbedaan di antara orang-orang Islam dalam hal pandangan agamanya terasa lebih menonjol dalam kehidupan sosial, lebih dari masa-masa sebelumnya."

"This article will clarify political representation of exhibition at Ullèn Sentalu Museum, Monumen Jogja Kembali, and Affandi Museum. These three museums are considered as proponent of Yogyakarta?s identity as the central of Javanese culture, struggle city, and the barometer of Indonesian fine art. The issue then, is it true that in the exhibitions? at the three museums are appropriate with the identity of Yogyakarta, or in the contrary, the exhibitions have no correlation with this city?s identity discourse. There is a possibility that museum precisely bringing self-interest for specific purposes. Therefore, this paper needs to observe how the exhibitions at these museums were implemented. Through interpretive approach, the exhibition at the museum may be analogous similar with language phenomenon, and hence museum is considered as text that can be read and interpreted. Exhibition at the museum was developed within framework of thoughts (ideology), motives, and specific discourses, which all of these are articulated through a set of symbols (collection), that arranged with special layout procedure (display procedure). Thus, museum becomes ?political? since, in this perspective, museum has power over the formation of discourse through their exhibition."

"Previous studies on Indonesian music focused on cultural heritage and traditional preservation or western-style modern music such as pop and rock music. Both were perceived as separate genre, even modern music often downplayed traditional one. The author argues analysis of hybrid genre like keroncong and dangdut would provide more complicated picture than such dichotomy. He explained long history of cultural exchanges in various parts of Indonesia which showed these two genres influenced each other. As a case study the author presents urban music as main character of urban social lives in Indonesia. This article depicts street music and campursari in Yogyakarta and linking it to popular cultures in some cities. Popular culture refers to informal recreation in different social settings. Eventually, this article reveals new ways to understand relation between music style and social identity in urban Indonesia."

"The assimilation between Arabic in-migrants from Hadramaut with Javanese noble women has been taking place since the 13th century. Some of their offspring has identified themselves as Arabic Indonesians, especially after Independence, while a proportion of them have chosen to associate themselves with their local Javanese relatives. The latter even has lost their Arabic cultural identity, and as a result, has become Javanese. This article tries to explain why such a phenomenon has materialized using a family case of a Javanese trah-Javanese version of a clan-who has been living outside the Yogyakarta court. By tracing the family lineage; attitude -both culturally and politically- and life-style of certain trah's figures as Javanese in the context of larger meso-institutional and macro-structural systems, this article argues that the fading away of Arabic identity among the offspring of this particular trah could be attributed to two contextual political economic relations between the Dutch and the Javanese rulers in two different eras. The first one was before the Dipanegara war when the relation was mainly economic, namely the Dutch as the trade-corporate (VOC); and the second was afterwards during which time the Dutch managed to consolidate their full total-grip as a colonial power. Furthermore, this article argues that the attitude of the Dutch and the way they treated the offspring this particular Arabic-Javanese court families, and their generational impact, could only be understood within the larger contexts of the day."

"During the Javanese historical development since the First Mataram Empire until today, Javanese cultural concepts as cultural syncretism of early Hindu-Buddhism, latter Hindu-Buddhism and Islam tends to be preserved. In its contact with later concepts from the west, such as formal education, modern politics and the entrance of various ideologies such as nationalism, capitalism, socialism, democracy and so on, has not negated those Javanese cultures. The main problem posed in this article is as follow: to what extent Javanese value of political power has been embraced by elites from Surakarta and Yogyakarta palaces. Whether their values are still strong or has it been diminished. Results reached in this research are: (1) Dominant perception of the elite, shows that their understanding of Javanese political power is still strong. They still strongly embraced the palace tradition and fully involved in all palace's rituals; (2) Western cultural penetration has not able to negate the strong rooted Javanese culture from these palace's elites. Their spirits are still bound to the Javanese culture which surrounded their palace; (3) Javanese sense of political power will play important role when it is positioned as spiritual power to those "njawani" rulers."

Inilah saat-saat berlangsungnya debat sekitar masalah pasca-modernisme (post-modernism) yang muncul pertama kali pada akhir tahun 1980an dan awal 1990an."

"Bertolak dari pengalaman penulis dalam mengamati pelaksanaan program Pengendalian Hama Terpadu (PHT) di Jawa Tengah, penulis berargumentasi bahwa tingkah laku penduduk setempat dan pengetahuan yang melandasinya - yang dinilai relevan bagi suatu program pembangunan yang khusus atau suatu program aksi yang praktis - dapat merupakan hal yang bermanfaat untuk menjadi pokok kajian Antropologi. Dalam argumentasinya penulis menekankan bahwa tingkah laku dan pengetahuan itu dapat menjadi fokus kajian sekali pun tidak dikenali sebelumnya sebagai hal yang secara budaya dinilai tepat, secara sosial diterima atau, dalam cara-cara yang penting, dipengaruhi oleh model-model budaya yang spesifik tentang dunia yang melingkupinya. Dengan tetap menaruh perhatian pada pengaruh-pengaruh budaya, ahli-ahli antropologi dapat memberikan sumbangsihnya secara lebih baik pada program-program pembangunan seperti program Pengendalian Hama Terpadu, bila mereka tidak terperangkap pada pertimbangan-pertimbangan yang dibatasi hanya pada hal-hal yang terkait erat dengan budaya dalam menentukan pokok kajian. Sebaliknya, mereka dapat mencurahkan perhatiannya untuk secara seksama mengamati situasi-situasi khusus dalam upaya menelusuri faktor-faktor apa saja, baik faktor-faktor budaya atau lainnya, yang beroperasi sebagai faktor-faktor yang berpengaruh pada pengetahuan dan tingkah laku penduduk setempat yang relevan."

"Berdasarkaan telaah atas edisi khusus Antropologi Indonesia no.56, penulis menyarankan agar Flores tidak dipandang sebagai suatu entitas tersendiri, tetapi sebagai suatu pulau yang terkait dalam suatu kepulauan. Lautan yang menghubungkan gugusan pulau-pulau itu memungkinkan terwujudnya hubungan-hubungan melalui perdagangan dan migrasi yang direfleksikan dalam mitos dan sejarah.
