"This book is an attempt towards a fresh understanding of the political economy of womens work in India and its relationship with the Indian state. The study critically analyses the concept and politics of work, worker, and women workers. The politics of the social, social welfare, and social policy is defined very close to how the public and the private are defined. There is an extension of the domestic into the public in the context of women workers in the social welfare schemes like the honorary workers. The study analyses the history and politics of work and womens work in the Indian context through a case study of honorary workers in the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme. The book examines how women figure in the states social welfare policies, making a link between the politics around womens work and social welfare policies. It contributes towards a better understanding of the broader political framework constructed by the political economy of the state within which womens work gets defined as honorary. The study examines the complexities around the weakening of social sector services with the withdrawal of state support under globalization coinciding with the need and demand for expansion of the horizon of state welfare schemes and programmes like the ICDS and its anganwadis. With more and more women especially from poor or lower-middle-class background employed in new social welfare schemes where the form of work is defined as voluntary social service, the book brings into attention the issue of further marginalization and exploitation of women workers especially from the lower or middle class by the Indian state.

"This volume highlights some emerging issues in the study of displaced persons in India, like the agency and voices of people who flee across an international border, the identities they forge for themselves, their relations with the hosts and their interactions with the state and non-governmental organizations. Three case studies included here are: (a) Partition refugees from East Pakistan to West Bengal, (b) Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka to India, and (c) Bangladesh Liberation War refugees from East Pakistan to West Bengal. The reader will find that each case is in itself highly complex. The treatment meted out to the displaced people in India has not been consistent. The volume shows that the responses of the state to cross-border displacement have been varied over space and time."

"This article explores state and social understandings of care work in India by examining two categories of non-family care workers – hired domestic workers and Anganwadi Workers/Helpers under the Integrated Child Development Scheme. Classified as “volunteers” in a government programme, the Anganwadi Workers/Helpers enjoy some social standing and relatively extensive unionization compared with domestic workers. Also, domestic workers have to make much harder trade-offs between their family's livelihood and daily care needs. The economic undervaluation of the care work they perform, however, is common to both categories of workers."

"This article attempts to contextualise how Max Weber influenced Carl Schmitt’s concept of the state and the political. By looking into Weber’s definition of the political association, the article firstly addresses an intimate relationship between his concept of the political and the feature of exercising violence. Under this definition, the state, as one kind of the political associations he defined, could be seen as an association that achieves “the monopoly of legitimate physical violence.” This Weberian definition of the state seems to influence how Schmitt defines the concept of the political. The article then analyses how Schmitt transformed such a Weberian definition into his concept of the political, i.e. to distinguish friends from enemies by which to decide what group is the aim of violence, and his concept of the state, i.e. a political entity that monopolises any decision from the political. The article concludes Schmitt’s Weberian legacy by pointing out that Schmitt, how-ever, tried to decouple the concept of the political from the state in order to account political developments. That is, how the international law and the world order trans-form when the states can no longer hold the monopoly of exercising violence."
