"This paper examines the ways in which God the Creator, the High God, is described in Toba Batak folk-tales. The sources for this investigation are stories recorded in pre-colonial (around 1850), colonial and post-colonial times (up to 2014). In different stories the High God can appear under various names, forms and gender, and resides in various places never inhabited by humans. Unlike a Deus otiosus, the Toba Batak High God is not "inactive" after creation,but continues to be involved in the life of mankind through local or supra-local manifestations. Although he rules the realm of death, he is nevertheless regarded as the source of life, fertility, health and prosperity. There are also stories about manifestations of God in which he shares the experience of suffering with human beings. The main Toba Batak community rituals in pre-colonial times were addressed to a manifestation of the High God."

"Tulisan ini berfokus pada tarombo dan martarombo yang bertindak sebagai strategi adaptasi budaya bagi orang Batak Toba di Jakarta untuk mempertahankan nilai budaya dan sistem kekerabatan mereka, meskipun berada jauh dari bona ni pasogit. Tarombo dimaknai sebagai simbol pembawa makna yang berguna sebagai aturan main dalam menemukan posisi diri pada silsilah keturunan Batak Toba. Gagasan nilai tarombo kemudian diejawentahkan oleh para perantau Batak Toba di Jakarta melalui interaksi dalam praktik keseharian yang disebut dengan martarombo. Dalam praktiknya, terdapat pemaknaan yang berbeda-beda terhadap tarombo sehingga negosiasi makna antar beberapa generasi tidak dapat dihindari. Oleh karenanya, makna yang mereka pegang menjadi penting untuk mengetahui strategi adaptasi dari kompleksitas budaya Batak Toba yang mereka pertahankan ketika berada di Jakarta. Tulisan ini memanfaatkan pendekatan etnografi untuk menemukan makna mengenai tarombo dan martarombo secara lebih detail dan mendalam.

This paper focusing on tarombo and martarombo which act as cultural adaptation strategies for the Toba Batak people in Jakarta to maintain their cultural values and kinship system, even though they are far from bona ni pasogit. Tarombo is interpreted as a symbol of the bearer of meaning which is useful as a rule in finding their position in the genealogical system of the Toba Batak kinship. The idea of the value of tarombo is then manifested by Toba Batak migrant through the interaction in daily practices called martarombo. In practice, there are different meanings of tarombo so negotiation of meaning between several generations is inevitable. Therefore, their interpretation of meaning becomes important on purpose to know the cultural adaptation strategies of the complexities of the Toba Batak culture that they maintain as a migrant in Jakarta. This paper utilizes an ethnographic approach to find meaning about tarombo and martarombo in more detail and depth.

"ABSTRAKTesis ini merupakan penelitian tentang konflik kapital simbolik dan kapitalbudaya yang terjadi pada Injil dan ulos Batak Toba yang ditunjukkan melaluipertarungan wacana dalam tiga milis Batak Toba, yaitu Silaban Brotherhood,Batak Cyber Community dan Batak Gaul Community. Rumusan permasalahandari tesis ini adalah bagaimana ulos dapat berperan sebagai kapital simbolik yangdigunakan dalam usaha perebutan kekuasaan oleh kelompok yang masihmempertahankan adat (tradisionalisme) terhadap kelompok yang berusahamereformasi adat yang berbau religi lama dan menggantinya dengan religi baru.Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif yang berupa analisis wacana(discourse analysis). Dalam melakukan penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan teoriBourdieu yang membahas tentang habitus dan bagaimana strategi perlawananyang digunakan dalam perebutan kekuasaan untuk mendapatkan suatu kekuasaansimbolik melalui tiga milis Batak Toba yaitu Silaban Brotherhood, Batak CyberCommunity dan Batak Gaul Community. Pada penelitian ini, penulis menemukanpada akhirnya agama (Injil) tidak dapat mengubah masyarakat Batak Tobamelalui permasalahan yang timbul akan resistensi adat dan ulos. Hal inidisebabkan oleh pertahanan identitas kebatakan yang telah melekat ?kental? danmendarah daging pada setiap orang Batak Toba yang ditunjukkan melaluikepemilikan kapital simbolik dan kapital budaya yang tidak hanya berfungsisebagai simbol/lambang budaya tetapi juga berfungsi sebagai simbol kedudukan,solidaritas/kekeluargaan dan simbol komunikasi.

AbstractThis thesis is a study about conflicts of symbolic capital and cultural capital thatoccurs in the Gospel and Toba Batak traditional cloths. It is shown throughstruggling discourses in three mailing lists of Toba Batak namely SilabanBrotherhood, Batak Batak Cyber Community and Community Gaul. At first, thecontradiction between ulos (custom) and the Gospel has been going on since thebeginning of the entry of Christianity in the land of Batak. The main problem ofthis thesis is how ulos can act as a symbolic capital that is used to get a power bythose who still maintain the custom (traditionalism) from groups who are seekinga reformation of the old religion and replacing it with a new religion. The methodof this thesis used a qualitative method of discourse analysis (discourse analysis).In conducting this study, the author used Bourdieu?s theory of habitus anddiscusses how the strategies of resistance that are used in a power struggle to get asymbolic power. In this research, the author found that religion (gospel) does notchange the Toba Batak society through important whether or not to maintain thecustoms and ulos. This is caused by a defense that has been attached theBataknese identity and ingrained in each of the Batakness people as they basicallyare an open society who are supposed to chew again its elements and can be usedin maintaining Batak identity."
