Using a tone-sequence model of intonation, it explores individual tones and how they combine, and discusses how information structure affects intonation in several ways, showing tones and melodies to be 'meaningful' in that they add a pragmatic component to what is being said. The author also shows how despite a superficial similarity, languages differ in how their tonal patterns arise from tone concatenation. Lexical tones, stress, phrase tones, and boundary tones are assigned differently in different languages, resulting in great variation in intonational grammar, both at the lexical and sentential level. "Ujaran bahasa Jerman dapat mengalami interferensi, terutama dalam unsur suprasegmental, yaitu intonasi. Kekeliruan intonasi saat mengujarkan sesuatu dapat membingungkan atau memberikan kesan yang berbeda bagi para pendengar atau lawan bicara. Topik yang diangkat dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimana interferensi intonasi ujaran bahasa Jerman terjadi akibat pengaruh intonasi bahasa Indonesia. Tujuannya adalah untuk mendeskripsikan pengaruh intonasi bahasa Indonesia agar dapat diketahui dan dapat diperbaiki serta dipelajari lebih lanjut untuk menghindari kesalahpahaman dalam menyampaikan pesan ketika berbicara. Subjek penelitian (responden) ini adalah seorang Youtuber yang kanalnya bernama Herr Toni dan sedang menempuh studi di Jerman. Objek penelitian berfokus pada interferensi intonasi ujaran bahasa Jerman. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk menjabarkan hasil penelitian eksperimental dengan menggunakan program Praat. Hasil dari penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa interferensi ditemukan pada ujaran responden saat ia belum lama tinggal di Jerman. Interferensi terjadi pada kesalahan penekanan kata dan intonasi akhir dalam kalimat interogatif maupun deklaratif. Namun, seiring berjalannya waktu, interferensi berkurang akibat faktor lingkungan dan motivasi.

German utterances can experience interference, especially in suprasegmental, namely intonation. Utterance with wrong intonation can confuse or give a different impression to the listener or the other person. The topic of this research is how the intonation interference of German occurs due to the influence of Indonesian intonation. The aim of this research is to describe the influence of Indonesian intonation so it can be identified, corrected and further studied to avoid misunderstandings in conveying messages when conversing. The research subject (respondent) is a Youtuber—whose channel is called Herr Toni—and is currently studying in Germany. The object of the research focuses on the intonation interference of German utterances. The research method uses descriptive qualitative method to describe the results of experimental research using the Praat program. The results of this study prove that interference is found in the respondent's speech in the first few months of his stay in Germany. Interference occurs in lexical stress and final intonation in interrogative and declarative sentences. However, the interference decreases over time due to environmental and motivational factors."
