ABSTRAKWe produced monoclonal antibody NG1 that strongly binds growing axons in the developing nervous system of mice. This antibody intensely labeled the growth cone of cultured neurons. Although these immunostaining patterns suggested the association of growing axons with the antigen recognized by this antibody, the antigen was identified as Nogo protein, an axonal repulsive factor isolated from the myelin. On the basis of this unexpected finding, we discuss the possible functions of Nogo in the developing nervous system."

"Scientists tend to take the thought processes that drive their research for granted, often learning them indirectly by observing first their supervisors and then their colleagues. This book emphasises the advantages of being explicit about these thought processes and aims to help those undertaking ecological research to develop a critical attitude to approaching a scientific problem and constructing a procedure for assessment. The outcome is a text which provides a framework for understanding methodological issues and which assists with the effective definition and planning of research. As such it represents a unique resource for anyone embarking on their research career. It also provides a valuable source of information for those more experienced researchers who are seeking to strengthen the methodology underlying their studies or who have an interest in the analysis of research methods in ecology."

"This textbook provides an easy-to-understand introduction to the complex topic of vaccine research and development. It gives a comprehensive though clearly arranged insight to the most important aspects of molecular vaccinology, leading from the basics in immunology, to design of vaccines and mode of action of vaccines to the actual formulation, manufacturing and registration of vaccines. The volume is therefore a valuable text about modern vaccinology for graduate students and a basic introduction for newcomers in vaccine design and development."

"The book presents the first comprehensive molecular theory of the living cell ever published since the cell doctrine was formulated in 1838-1839. It introduces into cell biology over thirty key concepts, principles and laws imported from physics, chemistry, computer science, linguistics, semiotics and philosophy. The author formulates physically, chemically and enzymologically realistic molecular mechanisms to account for basic living processes such as ligand-receptor interactions, enzymic catalysis, force-generating mechanisms in molecular motors, chromatin remodelling, and signal transduction. Possible solutions to basic and practical problems facing contemporary biology and biomedical sciences have been suggested, including pharmacotherapeutics and personalized medicine. "

"This book discusses, mitochondrial theories of aging, emphasizing oxidative stress and retrograde responses, the role of autophagy and mitophagy, the relationship of apoptosis to aging processe, the role of asymmetric segregation of damage in replicative aging, the role of replication stress, and the role of the cytoskeleton in aging. Modern methods of yeast genetics and genomics are described that can be used to search for aging-specific functions in a genome-wide unbiased fashion. The similarities in the pathology of senescence (studied in yeast) and of cancer cells, including genome instability, are examined."
