"By deconstructing a text as proposed by Derrida, the text can reveals its meanings. To do this, re-reading a text is neded. For this purpose, the study attempts to understand the meanings behind Rendra's Surat Cinta and Surat kepada Bunda by discussing the use of metaphors. Both poems are read, re-read and discussed to get their meanings. It is argued that the re-readings show opposite meanings as understood in the first readings. Power, sex, and love are among the issues explored in the two poems. Furthermore, the metaphors reflect what sort of person the "I" is. "

"In the Dutch colonial literature of the mid nineteenth century, the njai (Asian
concubine) is the symbol of degeneration and of undermining colonial society in
the Dutch Indies. Opposed to this portrayal, in Malay literature the image of the
njai is on the whole positive: she is faithful and loyal to her partner, intelligent,
and economical. However, she easily falls victim to external powers, which is
often the masculine power of the society she belongs to. In many Malay texts
she is represented as ready to fight back, primarily for the sake of the future of
her offspring(s) or herself. Sometimes she succumbs, sometimes she triumphs.
Examples can be found in texts like Tjerita Njai Dasima (1896), Tjerita Nji Paina
(1900), Seitang Koening (1906), Hikajat Raden Adjeng Badaroesmi (1901-1903), Tjerita
Njai Isah (1904), and Boenga roos dari Tjikembang (1927). These texts represent a
re-evaluation of the njai and stand in opposition to nineteenth century Dutch
colonial literature"

ABSTRACT
Although since 1973 the status of homosexuality is no longer considered as insanity, the presence of homophobic society is still inevitable until now. This study, then, aims to see what was actually happening in queer worlds after gay rights movements. Applying Hall?s cultural identity and Butler?s performativity theories through the movie An Englishman in New York (2009), this paper shows that queer diaspora creates new identities for both the indigenous people and the immigrants. This piece also reveals that the reason why 1970s queers liked to show their gender identities with queer fashion was because of the pressure from homophobic society., Although since 1973 the status of homosexuality is no longer considered as insanity, the presence of homophobic society is still inevitable until now.
.....The traditional Javanese culture is an integral part of the social life of the people in Tanggir Village, as depicted in the novel Di Kaki Bukit Cibalak. This culture is conducted by the society as a guide to face various situations. The story in this novel illustrates the response of the Tanggir community to the socio-political dynamics of the modern era in the 1970s that took place in their village. On one hand, they still adhere to traditional Javanese cultural beliefs for dealing with the issue. This analysis uses the Sociological Literature approach to delineate how the elements of traditional Javanese culture are utilized by the community to face the socio-political dynamics due to modernization in the novel Di Kaki Bukit Cibalak. This article uses the narratives and dialogues in the novel which is related to the research focus, namely the socio-cultural aspect within the Tanggir community. The analysis result of the novel Di Kaki Bukit Cibalak indicates the beliefs of nrimo ing pandum, wahyu cakraningrat, nunut kamukten, cucuk emas, and magic spell undergo a shift in meaning which result in socio-political deviations. Nevertheless, the beliefs of “wani ngalah, luhur wekasane” are applied according to their original meaning and have a positive impact. Thus, it can be concluded that the novel Di Kaki Bukit Cibalak shows that most of the traditional Javanese culture in Tanggir Village plays a significant role in driving the factor for the existence of socio-political dynamics."
