"Whilst a great deal of progress has been made in recent decades, concerns persist about the course of the social sciences. Progress in these disciplines is hard to assess and core scientific goals such as discovery, transparency, reproducibility, and cumulation remain frustratingly out of reach. Despite having technical acumen and an array tools at their disposal, today's social scientists may be only slightly better equipped to vanquish error and construct an edifice of truth than their forbears – who conducted analyses with slide rules and wrote up results with typewriters. This volume considers the challenges facing the social sciences, as well as possible solutions. In doing so, we adopt a systemic view of the subject matter. What are the rules and norms governing behavior in the social sciences? What kinds of research, and which sorts of researcher, succeed and fail under the current system? In what ways does this incentive structure serve, or subvert, the goal of scientific progress?"

"The purpose of this study is to examine the process of globalization in the Korean context and resultant changes in major social institutions and cultural values, especilly the impact of the recent economic crisis and subsequent neoliberal reform on traditional confucian values. The financial crisis in 1997 forced the Korean government to ask for IMF loans, to which conditionaly in the form of neoliberal economic reform is costumarily attached. Indeed the IMF is one of the many international organizations through which globalization as a hegemonic ideology propagates neoliberalism to the whole world based on the so-called Washington consensus. the economic crisis and the IMF-led neoliberal reform have resulted in changes in many areas: mass unemployement and employement instability; changes in family roles and marriage patterns; and polarization of income distribution with the shrinking middle class. Neoliberalizm also promotes such values as competitiveness, individualism, materialism, efficiency and instrumental rationality, which are in sharp contrast to thee traditional confucian values. In fact the neoliberal reform following the economic crisis created not only the social environment where confucian legacies can no longer hold, but also value conflicts between the upper and the lower classes and between the younger and the older generations."

"while in the whole scenario of contemporary Asia-Pacific's economic prosperity, Japan's catalytic role is continuing to evolve, ironically in this region's sprawling vibrant landscape, the only backward sub-region that has not yet kept pace with this changing trend is South Asia. Despite the magnitude of Japanese development aid to all South Asian nations, the region's share in Japan's global trade and investment is too small to merit much attention. moreover, in Tokyo's strategic-diplomatic agenda, South Asia has in fact figured little for a long time, because is has been relevant neither to Japan's security necessities nor the needs for a global economic governance framework. Nonetheless, Japan has very recently shown a heightened interest in expanding its cooperation with South Asia (particularly India). under the backdrop, this article strives to explore the reason why South Asia has today risen strategically in significance to the breadth of Japanese foreign policy initiatives. the study argues that for mutual values and benefits, the economic and geo-strategic partnership between Japan and South Asia needs to be nourished more effectively and constructively. this comprehensive policy-relevant scholarly piece concludes with a reasonable axpectation that Tokyo's policy towards South Asia will embrace a comprehensive review process with an action-oriented roadmap in a strongly competitive and dynamically changing Asia."
