"From Los Angeles to Tokyo, Urban Sociolinguistics is a sociolinguistic study of twelve urban settings around the world. Building on William Labov’s famous New York Study, the authors demonstrate how language use in these areas is changing based on belief systems, behavioural norms, day-to-day rituals and linguistic practices.
All chapters are written by key figures in sociolinguistics and presents the personal stories of individuals using linguistic means to go about their daily communications, in diverse sociolinguistic systems such as:
extremely large urban conurbations like Cairo, Tokyo, and Mexico City
smaller settings like Paris and Sydney
less urbanised places such as the Western Netherlands Randstad area and Kohima in India.
Providing new perspectives on crucial themes such as language choice and language contact, code-switching and mixing, language and identity, language policy and planning and social networks, this is key reading for students and researchers in the areas of multilingualism and super-diversity within sociolinguistics, applied linguistics and urban studies."

"Urban Criminology offers an accessible analysis of our urban condition, viewed through the prism of crime, disorder and social harm. This book gathers cutting-edge treatments, research field reports and critical examinations of crime and harm in cities, from the disciplines of urban studies and criminology. The social, economic and political composition of cities and the various inequalities that mark out and drive the problem of crime in many cities today are foregrounded. Readers follow a series of thematic engagements, generating a deeper understanding of a range of key areas that include problems of violence, social and spatial divisions, housing, policing and the role of the urban economy in issues of financial crime. This book comes at a time of rising crime in many cities and complex responses by city administrations and communities. It presents a critical, political thesis - that crime in cities must be understood with reference to the varying social structures, political forces and economic opportunities of cities. These influences intersect to produce dramatic variations in victimisation and attempts at social control, often felt most strongly around class and gender divisions. To understand crime, we must better understand the life of the city. Urban Criminology seeks to present an integrated framework that brings to life these key issues and seeks to enthuse students of our urban condition - to locate the harms within it and to identify ways of reducing the risk of crime. This book is ideal reading for all students with an interest in cities, crime, community life, urban sociology and urban cultures."

Contranym is a language phenomenon that occurs in language features with multiple meanings and amongst them are contrary meanings. This phenomenon is not publicly known and has raised various discussions and curiosity regarding possible Indonesia contranym words. Research on contranym, especially in Indonesian, has not been conducted much. However, there are several corpus-based studies in languages other than Indonesian that showed types of contranym and the usage of contranym within sentences. Therefore, this research is conducted with the focus on the use of Indonesian contranyms in sentences based on their environment, senses, and context formed in the sentence. The purposes of the research is to describe the usage and embodiment of contranym in sentences and to describe the determination of contranym. This research will be conducted with the method of descriptive qualitative analysis based on the linguistic corpus. The data source for this research will be taken from Leipzig Corpora and Twitter. The findings of this research suggest the usage of contranyms can be seen from various aspects, such as the sentence’s meaning, the environment of the word, and the context formed in the sentence. Moreover, the use of contranym words depends on its senses. This study also shows a tendency of the emergence of words that are similar to contranym, but it is not a contranym."
