"The decade-long slowdown of the Japanese economy has forced many Japanese firms out of their complacency. In their struggle to regain competitiveness, firms have begun, among other measures, to revise their employment practices. While concentrating on promotion policy and compensation schemes, this paper looks into the evidence of these attempts to alter employment practices. As far as the developments of the last 20 years since the first oil-shock are concerned, recent adjustments of promotion and compensation practices seem rather limited. Although the seniority rule is further losing its influence on promotion and wage decisions which are increasingly determined by qualification and competence instead of age and tenure, the core of the Japanese employment system, i.e. the long-term development of human capital inside the firm, is not yet subject to change."

"Penelitian ini mengkaji kritik terhadap kondisi sistem ketenagakerjaan Jepang mutakhir yang dihadapi oleh angkatan kerja muda Jepang dalam novel Mushoku Tensei ~Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu~ (disingkat Mushoku Tensei) (2014) dan Slime Taoshite 300-nen, Shiranai Uchi ni Level MAX ni Nattemashita (disingkat Slime Taoshite 300-nen) (2017). Kedua karya ini termasuk dalam genre isekai-mono yang selama ini dianggap sebagai genre eskapis. Akan tetapi, penelitian ini berargumen bahwa “latar daerah terpencil” dan “mekanisme gim” dalam latar kedua karya tersebut mempunyai fungsi sebagai kritik terhadap struktur sosial masyarakat Jepang. Penelitian ini menempatkan kedua karya di bawah payung genre cerita fantastik yang didefinisikan Susan Napier (1996) sebagai penyimpangan dari konsensus realitas yang dilakukan penulisnya secara sadar. Berdasarkan analisis, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa “latar daerah terpencil” dan “mekanisme gim” dalam latar objek penelitian berperan sebagai alat bantu bagi tokoh protagonis untuk bertahan hidup di isekai pada kedua karya. Fungsi tersebut sekaligus merupakan bentuk kritik tersirat terhadap sistem ketenagakerjaan Jepang mutakhir yang tidak memberikan alat bantu untuk sukses dalam masyarakat dan hanya menuntut dedikasi karyawan.

This study examines hidden criticism of the current conditions of the Japanese labor system faced by the young Japanese workforce within the novels Mushoku Tensei ~Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu~ (abbreviated as Mushoku Tensei) (2014) and Slime Taoshite 300-nen, Shiranai Uchi ni Level MAX ni Nattemashita (abbreviated as Slime Taoshite 300-nen) (2017). Both works belong to the isekai-mono genre, which has commonly been viewed as merely an escapist genre. However, this study argues that the "remote areas” or “rural areas" and "game mechanics" in the setting of both works function as critiques of the social structure of Japanese society. This study treats the two works under the umbrella of the fantastic story genre which is defined by Susan Napier (1996) as “any conscious departure from consensus reality”. Based on the analysis, this study found that the "remote areas" and "game mechanics" in the works’ settings act as tools to assist the protagonists in surviving within the isekai in both works. This function also acts as a form of criticism of the current Japanese labor system, which does not provide members of society with tools for success and only demands employee dedication."
