"Plants, animals and minerals have formed the basis of natural remedies for centuries, and many drugs in orthodox medicine are still derived from them. This book explores the diverse medicinal uses of 230 key ingredients, ranging from garlic to centipedes. A reference guide profiles each ingredient, describing its origins, its therapeutic properties and the disorders it is used to treat."

Crawford, Amanda McQuade
"Women are taking control of their own health and vitality by choosing herbal remedies as an alternative to traditional medicine. Because every year there are new research findings that women and their health providers need to know about, author Amanda McQuade Crawford, M.N.I.M.H, has used her clinical expertise to develop Herbal Remedies for Women.
Herbal medicine is, in fact, fast becoming the alternative medicine of choice. Included in Crawford’s book is a broad spectrum of herbal remedies for various ailments such as chasteberry seed for fibroids as well as dandelion root and leaf for endometriosis. Also included is an herbal glossary and information on herbal preparation which corrects many herbal myths.
Organized into six sections, Herbal Remedies for Women is designed to offer readers natural and effective therapies for an array of women’s issues.
Crawford also divides each chapter into subheads which cover: definition of the syndrome, symptoms and signs, cause, conventional medical care, herbal treatment, and nutrition. Whether or not they have previous experience with herbal medicine, Herbal Remedies for Women provides readers with simple but effective remedies for self-healing."

There have been previous studies on the communities of macrozoobenthos in lake Agathis and lake Mahoni in 2014 and 2010 respectively. This study aims to measure the diversity, eveness, and dominance level of macrozoobenthos communities in both lakes. Sampling is done on August 2024. Each lake is divided into 3 spots based on the flow of the water; inlet, midlet, and outlet. Makrozoobentos samples are obtained with an ekman grab and a net. The water parameters measured are temperature, acidity, turbidity, clarity, and dissolved oxygen levels. Eack macrozoobenthos community is analyzed with the Shanno-Wiener diversity index, the eveness index, and the Simpson dominance index. Both communities are compared with the Sorensen similarity index. Eight species of makrozoobentos are observed in the study. Pomacea canaliculata, Filopaludina javanica, Pila scutata and Lymnaea rubiginosa are found in both lakes. Gyraulus convexiusculus and Indoplanorbis exustus are only found in lake Agathis. Melanoides tuberculata and Parathelphusa Bogoriensis are only found in lake Mahoni. The study finds that lake Agathis and lake Mahoni have an average level of diversity, a high eveness value, a low dominance value, and have a 67% similarity value. Unideal water parameters have a negative effect on the diversity of macrozoobenthic communities.

McKenna, John
"'A long-awaited book that answers many questions' Jan de Vries. When antibiotics were developed in the 1940s, they were hailed as a huge breakthrough in the treatment of bacterial infections. Since then they have become the most commonly prescribed drugs in the world. However, massive over-prescribing is causing increasing problems. The advent of antibiotic-resistant organisms or 'superbugs' has more and more people demanding alternatives. Since it was published in 1996 'Alternatives to Antibiotics' has been translated into 16 languages and has been an international bestseller. 'Natural Alternatives to Antibiotics' is a revised and updated edition of this important book. Dr John McKenna looks at the various strains of infections which have become resistant since his book was first published. He has expanded his sections on alternative, herbal, homeopathic and nutritional medicines, and shows directly that it is still possible to treat infections without antibiotics while still acknowledging the times that they may be necessary."

"This book introduces the methodology for collection and identification of herbal materials, extraction and isolation of compounds from herbs, in vitro bioassay, in vivo animal test, toxicology, and clinical trials of herbal research. To fully understand and make the best use of herbal medicines requires the close combination of chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pharmacology, and clinical science. Although there are many books about traditional medicines research, they mostly focus on either chemical or pharmacological study results of certain plants. This book, however, covers the systematic study and analysis of herbal medicines in general - including chemical isolation and identification, bioassay and mechanism study, pharmacological experiment, and quality control of the raw plant material and end products"

"Traditional systems of medicine are fast emerging as viable alternatives to modern medical science. Further, in recent years the emphasis on botanicals as source for drug discovery and development has been realized globally. Added to this, the safer profile of herbal drugs combined with their low costs make them ideal targets for newer drugs. As in the modern system of medicine, viz. allopathy, herbal drugs form an inseparable part of the management of various disorders. The concept of scientific validation of the basis of traditional uses of herbal medicines has given birth to a new concept of reverse pharmacology, and interactions between traditional and modern systems of medicine are being increasingly encouraged. Recent Advances in Herbal Drug Research and Therapy showcases some of these crucial and emerging issues relating to herbal drugs. This compilation is a judicious combination of research and conventional aspects on the subject of herbal drugs, their pharmacology and therapeutic applications. Some very relevant general and systemic pharmacological as well as toxicological aspects have been highlighted by some of the leading experts in this field. The book will be of interest to students, scientists, teachers and other health professionals in the area of pharmacology, toxicology and allied health sciences."
