"Budaya Cina berkembang dalam banyak budaya populer termasuk pada game. Salah satu game yang mengandung budaya Cina yakni Mobile Legends: Bang Bang! atau MLBB, merupakan game rintisan Moonton selaku perusahaan pengembangnya yang berasal dari Shanghai. Moonton mengangkat budaya Cina dalam MLBB melalui karakter-karakter hero yang dapat dipilih para pemain game, di antaranya karakter hero Chang’e, Sun, dan Zilong yang memiliki popularitas tertinggi. Ketiga karakter hero tersebut diangkat berdasarkan tokoh mitos, sastra, dan sejarah Cina yakni: tokoh mitos Dewi Chang’e, tokoh sastra Sun Wukong, dan tokoh sejarah Zhao Yun. Ketiga karakter hero ini mengalami transformasi pada nama hingga latar belakang ceritanya sehingga terdapat perbedaan dari para tokoh aslinya. Transformasi tersebut dilakukan oleh pengembang sebagai penyesuaian pada konseptualisasi game sekaligus sebagai strategi pemasaran. Dari hasil mengkaji transformasi tiga tokoh yang disebut di atas menjadi karakter hero MLBB terpilih (Chang’e, Sun, dan Zilong) diperoleh kesimpulan bahwa transformasi yang dibuat pengembang tidak hanya menarik perhatian para pemain, namun juga menjadi strategi MLBB untuk mengembangkan pasar.

Chinese culture thrives on a lot of popular culture including gaming. One of the games that contain Chinese culture is Mobile Legends: Bang Bang! or MLBB, developed by Moonton as the developer company from Shanghai. Moonton elevates Chinese culture in MLBB through hero characters that gamers can choose from. There are 11 hero characters with Chinese culture, including the hero characters Chang'e, Sun, and Zilong who have the highest popularity. The three hero characters are based on mythical, literature and historical characters related to China, namely: (1) the mythical figure Chang'e as the hero character Chang'e, (2) the literature figure Sun Wukong as Sun, and (3) the historical character Zhao Yun as the hero character Zilong. The hero characters have undergone transformation from the name to the story background so there are differences from the figures. This transformation aims to be an adjustment to the game conceptualization as well as a marketing strategy to attract the players’ attention. This research will examine the figures’ transformation into selected MLBB hero characters (Chang'e, Sun, and Zilong), and it is concluded that the transformations made by the developers not only attract the players’ attention, but also eventually became MLBB's strategy to develop the market."

Video game online sendiri sekarang tidaklah asing untuk memasukan transaksi ekonomi kedalamnya. Transaksi itu bisa dilakukan untuk berbagai macam hal, mulai dari pembelian sebuah barang (in-game item) yang memiliki keuntungan untuk para konsumernya, ataupun in- game item yang sama sekali tidak memberikan keuntungan apapun secara langsung untuk para konsumernya. Para pemain yang tergabung dalam sebuah fandom permainan tersebut, biasanya rela untuk mengeluarkan uang yang berjumlah tidak sedikit untuk bisa memperoleh beberapa in-game item tersebut. Hal ini juga tidak luput dari bagaimana keadaan sosial-ekonomi yang menjadi sebuah penentu dari pembentuk fandom itu sendiri, melihat bagaimana para player bertindak dalam fandomnya. Untuk hal ini, bisa kita katakan, khususnya untuk sebuah pembelian in-game item yang tidak memiliki fungsi atau memberi keuntungan secara langsung pada konsumernya, terjadi sebuah fenomena conspicuous consumption yang terjadi. Fenomena ini terjadi bisa karena berbagai hal. Hal ini sendiri ditunjukan oleh para anggota fandom (player) dalam sebuah permainan video game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), yang melakukan conspicuous consumption dengan suatu tujuan tertentu, yang berhubungan dengan status.

Video games are something that is growing very rapidly because of the support from the growing and development from technological developments. Video games themselves now have the support of internet connectivity that allows the players to connect themselves with each other. One of the video game genres that has rapidly increasing popularity today is the Massive Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre, which allows many players who are the members of a team to help each other to defeat the enemy team. Nowadays it‟s a common thing in online video games to include economic transaction in it. The transaction can be done for a variety of things, from purchasing an item (in-game item) that has benefits for its consumers, or in-game items that do not provide any direct benefit to the consumers at all. The players who are members of a fandom of the game, are usually willing to spend a large amount of money to be able to get some of these in-game items. This is also due to the socio-economic conditions which are the determinants of the fandom, seeing how the players act in their fandom. For this, we can say, especially for an in-game item purchase that does not have a function or directly benefits the consumer, a conspicuous consumption phenomenon occurs. This phenomenon can occur due to various things. This was shown by fandom members (players) in a video game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), who do conspicuous consumption with a specific purpose, which related to status."
