"Statisticians know that the clean data sets that appear in textbook problems have little to do with real-life industry data. To better prepare their students for all types of statistical careers, academic statisticians now strive to use data sets from real-life statistical problems. This book contains 20 case studies that use actual data sets that have not been simplified for classroom use. Each case study is a collaboration between statisticians from academe and from business, industry, or government.
This book is the result of a collaborative workshop of statisticians focusing on academic-industrial partnerships. The cases come from a wide variety of application areas, including biology/environment, medical and health care, pharmaceutical, marketing and survey research, and manufacturing."

"As this monograph shows, the purpose of cardinal spline interpolation is to bridge the gap between the linear spline and the cardinal series. The author explains cardinal spline functions, the basic properties of B-splines, including B- splines with equidistant knots and cardinal splines represented in terms of B-splines, and exponential Euler splines, leading to the most important case and central problem of the book-- cardinal spline interpolation, with main results, proofs, and some applications. Other topics discussed include cardinal Hermite interpolation, semi-cardinal interpolation, finite spline interpolation problems, extremum and limit properties, equidistant spline interpolation applied to approximations of Fourier transforms, and the smoothing of histograms."

"Simulated annealing has proved to be an easy and reliable method for finding optimal values of a problem in cases where there is no road map to possible solutions. Facts, Conjectures, and Improvements for Simulated Annealing offers an introduction to this topic for novices and provides an informative review of the area for the more expert reader. This book brings together for the first time many of the theoretical foundations for improvements to algorithms for global optimization that until now existed only in scattered research articles.
The method described in this book operates by simulating the cooling of a (usually fictitious) physical system whose possible energies correspond to the values of the objective function being minimized. The analogy works because physical systems occupy only states with the lowest energy as the temperature is lowered to absolute zero."

"Improperly posed Cauchy problems are the primary topics in this discussion which assumes that the geometry and coefficients of the equations are known precisely. Appropriate references are made to other classes of improperly posed problems. The contents include straight forward examples of methods eigenfunction, quasireversibility, logarithmic convexity, Lagrange identity, and weighted energy used in treating improperly posed Cauchy problems. The Cauchy problem for a class of second order operator equations is examined as is the question of determining explicit stability inequalities for solving the Cauchy problem for elliptic equations. Among other things, an example with improperly posed perturbed and unperturbed problems is discussed and concavity methods are used to investigate finite escape time for classes of operator equations."

"This monograph considers pure integer programming problems which concern packing, partitioning or covering. For this class of problems, an algorithmic framework using a duality approach is offered. Furthermore, the author proposes for the first time a general framework for both packing and covering problems characterizing the convex whole of integer solutions."

"Long considered to be a classic in its field, this was the first book in English to include three basic fields of the analysis of matrices -- symmetric matrices and quadratic forms, matrices and differential equations, and positive matrices and their use in probability theory and mathematical economics. Written in lucid, concise terms, this volume covers all the key aspects of matrix analysis and presents a variety of fundamental methods. Originally published in 1970, this book replaces the first edition previously published by SIAM in the Classics series.
Here you will find a basic guide to operations with matrices and the theory of symmetric matrices, plus an understanding of general square matrices, origins of Markov matrices and non-negative matrices in general, minimum- maximum characterization of characteristic roots, Krnoecker products, functions of matrices, and much more. These ideas and methods will serve as powerful analytical tools.
In addition, this volume includes exercises of all levels of difficulty and many references to original papers containing further results. The problem sections contain many useful and interesting results that are not easily found elsewhere. A discussion of the theoretical treatment of matrices in the computational solution of ordinary and partial differential equations, as well as important chapters on dynamic programming and stochastic matrices are also included."

"This monograph deals with aspects of the computer programming process that involve techniques derived from mathematical logic. The author focuses on proving that a given program produces the intended result whenever it halts, that a given program will eventually halt, that a given program is partially correct and terminates, and that a system of rewriting rules always halts. Also, the author describes the intermediate behavior of a given program, and discusses constructing a program to meet a given specification."

"The scope of the discussion is limited to certain types of general purpose computing systems whose characteristics involve multiprogramming, multiprocessors, communication lines serving many users, and on-line terminal systems. The goal is to gain a better understanding of computing systems through the techniques of measurement and performance evaluation."

"Mathematical Optimization and Economic Theory provides a self-contained introduction to and survey of mathematical programming and control techniques and their applications to static and dynamic problems in economics, respectively. It is distinctive in showing the unity of the various approaches to solving problems of constrained optimization that all stem back directly or indirectly to the method of Lagrange multipliers. In the 30 years since its initial publication, there have been many more applications of these mathematical techniques in economics, as well as some advances in the mathematics of programming and control. Nevertheless, the basic techniques remain the same today as when the book was originally published. Thus, it continues to be useful not only to its original audience of advanced undergraduate and graduate students in economics, but also to mathematicians and other researchers who are interested in learning about the applications of the mathematics of optimization to economics.
The book is distinctive in that it covers in some depth both static programming problems and dynamic control problems of optimization and the techniques of their solution. It also clearly presents many applications of these techniques to economics, and it shows why optimization is important for economics. Many cchallenging problems for both students and researchers are included."
