Walsh, Anthony, 1941-
"Criminologists can benefit from questioning the underlying assumptions upon which they rest their work. Philosophy has the ability to clarify our thoughts, inform us of why we think about things the way we do, solve contradictions in our thinking we never knew existed, and even dissolve some dichotomies we thought were cast in stone. One of those dichotomies is free will vs. determinism. Criminology must reckon with both free will and agency, as posited by some theories, and determinism, as posited by others-including the ever more influential fields of genetics and biosocial criminology. This title examines philosophical concepts such as these in the context of important criminological theories or issues that are foundational but not generally considered in the literature on this topic."

Indonesia is one of the biggest producers in the palm-oil industry, able to produce up to 47 million tons of palm-oil per year. The magnitude of the development of palm-oil plantations has caused deforestation and negatively impacted the non-humans in the area, including the orangutans. This writing used the concept of green victim, animal harm and species justice through a green criminology perspective to explain how these plantations affect the victimization of orangutans. A descriptive analysis is established on secondary data of 10 cases from media articles relating to findings of orangutans in areas of palm-oil plantations and violence towards orangutans in areas of palm-oil plantations or areas of human society. The result of the analysis showed the parties of the industry and offenders are putting forward their human interests over the orangutan interests by committing the fourth type of animal harm; affecting welfare by disturbing the ecosystem, and the second type; causing direct harm. Orangutans are positioned as green victims whose, based on species justice, rights to survival and not sustain abuse have been violated. Therefore, it can be concluded that as non-humans, orangutans should be placed in the same norms and morality as humans in order to be protected from continuous victimization."
