Clark, Eve V.
Abstrak :
"How do young children learn language? When does this process start? What does language acquisition involve? Children are exposed to language from birth, surrounded by knowledgeable speakers who offer feedback and provide extensive practice every day. Through conversation and joint activities, children master the language being used around them. This fully revised third edition of Eve V. Clark's bestselling textbook offers comprehensive coverage of language acquisition, from a baby's first sounds to a child's increasing skill in negotiating, explaining and entertaining with language. This book, drawing together the most recent findings in the field, and illustrated with examples from a wide range of experimental and observational studies, including the author's own diary observations, presents an essential and comprehensive guide to first language acquisition. It will be fascinating reading for students of linguistics, developmental psychology, and cognitive science"--

Schilling, Natalie
Abstrak :
Synopsis 'Natalie Schilling learned the 'secrets of sociolinguistic fieldwork' (as she so aptly puts it) in both urban and rural settings. Her hands-on experience gives her book uncommon breadth, and her sensitivity, both scientific and social, gives it unrivalled depth.' J. K. Chambers, University of Toronto '... a detailed blueprint of sociolinguistic fieldwork, from initial study design, to making contacts, to more long term community involvement ... manages to capture wonderfully the often 'messy' experience of data collection in the real world. The 'secrets' of sociolinguistic fieldwork are indeed unlocked in this book.' Jennifer Smith, University of Glasgow 'Perhaps Natalie Schilling has done our little band of scholars a bad service by letting our secrets out in this comprehensive and clearly written account of what sociolinguists do - not just the various ways we go about doing it but, more importantly, the social and linguistic questions (and their interaction) that motivate our doing it, these latter points very well-integrated into the how-tos. A much larger audience will now have access to our mysteries, but, of all the linguistic mysteries that should be revealed to a more general public, sociolinguistics is surely at the forefront in the roles it plays in establishing a more democratic society. In short, on all these fronts, this is a very good place to learn how to do and why we do sociolinguistics.' Dennis R. Preston, Regents Professor, Oklahoma State University

Kwak, Duck-Joo
Abstrak :
Beginning by defining key terms such as ‘self-transformation’, Kwak sketches the contemporary debates between Jürgen Habermas and Charles Taylor on the status of religious language in the public domain, and its relationship to secular language. This allows her to contextualize her book’s central questions: how can philosophical practice reduce the experiential rift between knowledge and wisdom? How can the essay form be developed so that it facilitates, as praxis, pedagogical self-transformation? Kwak develops her answers by working through ideas of George Lukács and Stanley Cavell, of Hans Blumenberg and Søren Kierkegaard. Kwak’s work provides templates for new forms of educational writing, new approaches to teaching educators, and new ways of writing methodology for educational researchers.
