"Arkeologi dan museum saat ini telah menjadi fenomena global, termasuk di Indonesia. Museum arkeologi adalah institusi yang mensinergikan disiplin ilmu arkeologi dan museologi. Museum ini berperan mengumpulkan budaya material, mengelolanya dan menginterpretasinya untuk dikomunikasikan pada publik. Menetapkan gagasan dan membuat konsep perencanaan awal pembentukan Museum Arkeologi Indonesia merupakan pokok bahasan pada tesis ini. Dengan konsep tiga fungsi dasar museum berupa penelitian, preservasi, dan komunikasi, perencanaan museum arkeologi dikembangkan. Pada museum generasi mendatang, termasuk museum arkeologi kecenderungannya beralih dari Eropa dan Wilayah Barat ke wilayah Asia dan Timur Tengah. Bagi Indonesia sebagai salah satu pusat perkembangan peradaban di Asia, ini merupakan tantangan sekaligus peluang yang harus direbut. Dengan potensi data arkeologi yang demikian melimpah dan sumberdaya yang cukup memadai, Indonesia harus berkompetisi bersama negara lain memajukan ilmu pengetahuan melalui media museum. Museum arkeologi dapat menjadi sebuah alat untuk menemukan identitas nasional, mengenali, dan menghargai tinggalan budaya material serta berbagai budaya yang masih hidup di daerah. Mengkonsepkan pembentukan Museum Arkeologi Indonesia merupakan bagian dari upaya mewujudkannya.

Nowadays Archaeology and Museum have become a global phenomenon. Such is the case in Indonesia. An archaeological museum is an institution which synergizes the disciplines of archaeology and museology. A museum?s role is to collect material culture, manage them and then interpret them to communicate them to the general public. Determining an idea and making an early plan to establish an Archaeological Museum of Indonesia are the main topic of discussion of this thesis. By using the concept of three basic functions of a museum ? research, preservation, and communication ? a plan of an archaeological museum is developed. The next generation of museums, including archaeological museums, the trend shifts from Europe and the Western World to Asia and the Middle East.

For Indonesia, as one of the development centers of civilization in Asia, this is a challenge and opportunity worth pursuing. With abundant potency of archaeological data and adequate sources, Indonesia has to compete with other countries in advancing science and knowledge with museum as its media. Archaeological museum can be used as a tool to find our national identity as well as to recognize and appreciate remains of material culture and various living cultures all over Indonesia. Making a concept of the establishment of an Archaeological Museum of Indonesia is part of the effort to realize it."
