"Bio-inspired design (also called biomimetics or biomimicry) is a promising approach for the development of innovative technical products – not only in mechanical engineering, but also in areas such as material science and even computer engineering. Innovations such as humanoid robots or multifunctional materials have shown the potential of bio-inspired design. However, in industrial companies, bio-inspired design remains an “exotic” approach which is rarely used in innovation practice. One reason for this is a lack of knowledge on how to implement bio-inspired design in practice. Therefore, this guide book was written to explain the application of bio-inspired design methods and tools. The target groups are professional engineers and biologists, as well as students of both disciplines.
The book presents a selection of methods for specific activities in bio-inspired design, namely: planning a bio-inspired design project, abstraction, search, analysis and comparison, and transfer of analogies. Factsheets give an overview of each method, its advantages and challenges, and its suitability for different bio-inspired design approaches and scenarios. To facilitate understanding, all methods are explained with the help of the same example. In addition, ten best practice examples show the practical applicability of bio-inspired design."

Indonesia public transportation still left behind Singapore which has integrated public transportation, that caused many Indonesian people prefer to use their own vehicle. Indonesia government have prepared Rancangan Peraturan Daerah Rencana Induk Transportasi (RIT) Jakarta 2019-2039 and Rancangan Rencana Induk Perkeretaapian Perkotaan (RIPP) tahun 2021, that have already planed several rail-based public transport routes such as MRT, LRT, and several routes for which the mode of transportation has not been determined that will be the part of Perkeretaapian Perkotaan Jakarta (PPJ) system. Several routes which the mode of transportation has not been determined need to studied further for determining which most compatible mode for the route, and need to review the feasibility."

"Saturation nonlinearities are ubiquitous in engineering systems, every physical actuator or sensor is subject to saturation owing to its maximum and minimum limits. Input saturation is an operating condition that is well known to the control community for its “side effects”, which cause conventional controllers to lose their closed-loop performance as well as control authority in stabilization. Therefore, the practical application of control theory cannot avoid taking into account saturation nonlinearities in actuators, explicitly dealing with constraints in control design."

PT BIRU who provide oil and gas engineering consultation has been suffered from many project delays especially related to DED (Detailed Engineering Design) process. Therefore losses to the company is inevitable. In order to overcome this condition, a waste analysis in DED process of EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects is needed. This analysis is conducted using Lean Design Management approach. Data is collected using questionnaire, interview, and secondary data. Process design diagnosis and evaluation is performed using value stream mapping, time distribution, and performance indicator. Out of 24 type of identified wastes, there are 10 type of wastes that have 80% of cumulative frequency that happened in the DED process of PT BIRU.
The research suggests improvement activities in: scope of work; communication and internal coordination; quality control; relationship among project owner and contractor; system integration; and management support. A value stream mapping is proposed to decrease non-added value activity by 29,3%, reducing idle time by 82,5%, and increasing the utilization in the cycle time.
