"The student demographic of universities today has changed quite dramatically from even a decade ago. As universities seek to internationalise, widen participation and derive attendant reputational and financial benefits, along with greater opportunities for research collaborations and industry links, they also face a growing challenge associated with what Neil Murray terms 'the English language question'. In particular, as the proportion of students of non-English speaking backgrounds entering universities increases, there is growing concern over levels of language proficiency and what this can mean for educational standards, the student experience and, ultimately, institutional standing. Standards of English in Higher Education unpacks a number of key and interrelated issues - for example, the assessment of proficiency and the structure and nature of provision - that bear on the question of English language standards, and in doing so offers a frank and critical appraisal of English language in higher education today."

"The socially minded linguistic study of storytelling in everyday life has been rapidly expanding. This book provides a critical engagement with this dynamic i eld of narrative studies, addressing long-standing questions such as definitions of narrative and views of narrative structure but also more recent preoccupations such as narrative discourse and identities, narrative language, power and ideologies. It also offers an overview of a wide range of methodologies, analytical modes and perspectives on narrative from conversation analysis to critical discourse analysis, to linguistic anthropology and ethnography of communication. The discussion engages with studies of narrative in multiple situational and cultural settings, from informal–intimate to institutional. It also demonstrates how recent trends in narrative analysis, such as small stories research, positioning analysis and sociocultural orientations, have contributed to a new paradigm that approaches narratives not simply as texts, but rather as complex communicative practices intimately linked with the production of social life."

"2014 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Norwegian nation following centuries of Danish rule. This book gives a comprehensive account of that entire 200-year period, and analyses how Norwegians defined, fought over, and developed their own independent Scandinavian language, differentiating it from Danish and Swedish, through language planning. The almost two centuries of Norwegian language planning and conflict encompassed an extraordinary sociolinguistic experiment which led to decades of intense linguistic struggle and which has had no parallel anywhere else in the world. This fascinating book-length case study provides students and scholars in sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, language planning and language policy with a richly detailed insight into the uniqueness of the Norwegian language development."

The aim of this study is to obtain a description of the usage of terminology by medical and financial professionals. The research has tried to combine two disciplines, i.e. sociolinguistics and terminology and thus it could be named socioterminology. The theoretical framework for in this study is the theory of language planning, especially the standardization of terminology, and term formation.
Standardization of terms is a complex process that entails a number of operations, such as the unification of concepts, the definition of terms, the reduction of homonymy, the elimination of synonymy, the fixing of designations, including abbreviations and symbols, and also the coinage of new terms. For these reasons, I have tried to compare the usage of terminologies between medical and financial professionals. To what extent is the usage of terminologies by each professional uniform? How does she or he think about the Indonesian terminologies? Which terminology has he or she chosen? Does he or she prefer borrowed terms or translated terms?
The results indicate that the degree of uniformity in the usage of terminology by the professionals varies. The uniformity degree among the medical professionals is higher (97.50%) than that among the financial professionals (60%). A medical professional uses a different form when talking to his or her colleagues compared to the occasion when talking to someone who belongs to a different profession. The attitudes of both groups towards the Indonesian terms are positive, but the doctors' attitudes are more positive than those of the financial professionals. They prefer the borrowed terms to the translated terms.

ABSTRACT
English code switching and code mixing in song lyrics have been an increasingly popular trend for songwriters. While there has been quite a number of research on code switching and code mixing in verbal communication, little is known about how they are used in written form, particularly in song lyrics. This study attempts to fill the gap by exploring and describing the recent phenomenon of English code switching and code mixing in J Pop songs. It aims to investigate the extent to which English codes are used in J Pop song lyrics and investigate the motives behind such usage. It was discovered that English words, mainly nouns, were the most frequently used items in J Pop songs. As for code switching, the most frequently used sentences are declamatory sentences. The study also found that English items are most frequently incorporated in J Pop songs as a poetic device."
