Nasakh mengandung dua pengertian pokok, yaitu "pembatalan" dan "pengkhususan". Yang dimaksud "pembatalan" adalah pemba talan suatu hukum (seluruh kemungkinan ketentuan yang dicakup oleh suatu hukum). Adapun "pengkhususan" adalah pembatalan sebagian ketentuan yang terdapat dalam suatu hukum. Nasakh "pengkhususan" meliputi tiga metoda analisis nash-nash yang secara permukaan menampakkan adanya ta'arudi (konntradiksi). Ketiga metoda tersebut dikenal dalam Ushul al-Figh dengan kaidah-kaidah takhsish al-'am (pengkhususan suatu hukum yang bersifat umum), taqyid al-muthlaqah (penetapan suatu hukum dengan syarat tertentu atau pembatasan suatu hukum dengan sifat tertentu) dan tabyin al-mujmal (penjelasan suatu hukum yang bersifat samar atau pembatasan suatu hukum yang mengandung kesamaran).
