Abstrak :
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperlihatkan beberapa tilikan dari kajian sosiolinguistik yang hanya dibatasi pada penggunaan ungkapan vernakuler, ungkapan ekspletif, dan ungkapan vokatif (kata sapaan) yang digunakan untuk menilai hasil terjemahan karya sastra, yaitu novel. Penerjemahan novel memiliki masalah tersendiri yang menyangkut budaya, kesantunan, dan ciri sosial. Dalam pengalihan pesan penerjemah harus menggunakan kriteria peniiaian (evaluation) terjemahan yang ditawarkan oleh Larson (1984), yaitu ketepatan (accuracy), kejelasan (clarity), dan kewajaran (naturalness). Dalam penelitian ini digunakan sumber data novel asli A Time to Kill dan The Firm karya John Grisham dan Malice karya Danielle Steel beserta terjemahannya, yaitu Saat untuk Membunuh dan Biro Hukum karya Hidayat Saleh dan Jerat-Jerat Kedengkian karya Ny. Suwarni A.S. Metode yang digunakan untuk menganalisis data adalah (a) menganalisis makna data, padanan, dan praktik pemakaiannya dalam masyarakat Amerika dengan cara menguraikan penggunaannya dalam budaya dan nuansa masyarakat Amerika dengan memanfaatkan pendapat para ahli dan penutur asli bahasa sumber dan (b) menganalisis ketepatan, kejelasan, dan kewajaran dalam bahasa sasaran dalam esai-esai pendek menurut situasi dan konteksnya agar ciri sosialnya terlihat dalam bahasa sasaran. Dalam penelitian ini diperlihatkan bahwa tilikan sosiolinguistik yang hanya dibatasi pada ungkapan vemakuler, ungkapan ekspletif, dan ungkapan vokatif (kata sapaan) terbukti dapat digunakan sebagai medium analisis dalam menilai hasil terjemahan untuk memperoleh padanan yang tepat, jelas, dan wajar.

This research aims to show that some insights from sociolinguistic studies, which are limited to the use of vernacular, expletives and vocatives (terms of address), are employed to assess the translation results, in particular, literary works, i.e. novels. In rendering the original novels there are some particular problems related to cultures, politeness and social features. The translators must employ the requirements of accuracy, clarity and naturalness given by Larson (1984). The translation of some parts of John Grisham's A Time to Kill and The Firm into Saat untuk Membunuh and Biro Hukum by Hidayat Saleh and Danielle Steel's Malice into Jerat-Jerat Kedengkian by Ny. Suwarni A.S. are employed to illustrate problems. The analysis methods conducted in this research are (a) to analyze the sense of data, the equivalents, and the use of the source texts in the American society by describing that of source texts in American culture and society by using some insights from sociolinguistic experts and the native speaker of the source language and (b) to analyze accuracy, clarity and naturalness in the target language in short essays according to the situation and the context so that the social features shown in the target language. It is shown that some insights from sociolinguistics limited to the use of vernacular, expletives and vocatives are proved to be useful as media of analysis in the assessment of translation results in order to obtain the accurate, clear and natural equivalence.

Disertasi ini menyingkap strategi, ideologi, metode, dan teknik penerjemahan ungkapan sapaan bahasa Inggris-Amerika dan ungkapan sapaan bahasa Indonesia serta budaya kebahasaan yang terlibat di dalam penerjemahan. Penelitian kualitatif ini menggunakan tiga novel Amerika beserta terjemahan bahasa Indonesianya dan wawancara dengan penerjemah serta narasumber lain. Didukung oleh teori penerjemahan, ungkapan sapaan, dan budaya kebahasaan, penelitian ini menemukan dua ideologi penerjemahan yang berhulu pada strategi penerjemahan pemancaan (foreignization) dan pelokalan (domestication). Di samping itu, juga ditemukan tujuh metode penerjemahan dan dua puluh empat teknik penerjemahan serta budaya kebahasaan yang menyangkut kuasa (power) dan solidaritas (solidarity).

ABSTRACT
This dissertation reveals the translation strategies, ideologies of translation, translation methods, and translation techniques of American-English forms of address into their Indonesian translations within linguistic culture involved in the translation. This qualitative research employs three American novels with their translation versions and interviews with their translators and other resource persons. Through the theories of translation, forms of address theories, and linguistic culture, the research findings indicate that two ideologies of translation: foreignization and domestication. Besides, it is also found that there are seven methods of translation with twenty four techniques of translation and linguistic culture relating to power and solidarity.

Abstrak :
This study is concerned with a productive word-form process in the morphological level, such as abbreviation. Through the process of the word form, I intend to find out how to make new words in using the abbreviation in English. Besides, I intend to review the concept of abbreviation. The aim of this study is also to observe how the abbreviation can form new words. The data employed in this study are from newspaper Jakarta Post and Kompas, and examples provided by the related linguists. With the data exemplified by the linguists and based on their discussion on abbreviation, I think there are some mistakes on information and definitions provided by them about the abbreviation. Hence, I try to present and find out new information about the abbreviation and its types morphologically. As the result of this study, there are 16 types of abbreviation. They are (1) acronyms, (2) part acronyms, (3) amalgam, (4) blends, (5) loan blends, (6) element blends, (7) part-whole blends, (8) lexical blends, (9) separated blends, (10) contraction, (11) letter symbol, (12) clippings, (13) alphabetism, (14) sycronyms, (15) acronym coinages, and (16) analogical forms.
