"ABSTRAKKarya sastra anak kerapkali memperkuat gagasan gender, entah itu melalui representasi gender, konstruksi gender, dll. Sebagai kerangka teoretisnya, penelitian ini bergantung pada teori Judith Butler tentang identitas yang dibangun secara sosial dan teori esensialisme gender untuk mempelajari konstruksi identitas gender tokoh utama dalam The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane karya Kate Dicamillo. Dalam teorinya, Judith menyatakan bahwa identitas gender kita adalah produk konstruksi sosial yang diabadikan melalui wacana-wacana untuk menciptakan rasa identitas yang melekat; yang berarti bahwa itu bukan proses alami. Sebaliknya, pendekatan esensialisme pada identitas gender menekankan bahwa ada esensi sejati dalam identitas gender kita. Makalah ini, dengan demikian, berfokus pada analisis kontestasi antara konstruksi sosial identitas gender dan esensialisme gender yang dipostulasikan dalam buku ini. ABSTRACTChildren 39;s literature often reinforces the idea of gender, whether it is through the representation of genders, the construction of genders, etc. As its theoretical framework, this study depends on Judith Butler 39;s theory of socially constructed identity and the theory of gender essentialism to study gender identity construction of the main character in Kate Dicamillo 39;s The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. In her theory, Judith states that our gender identity is a product of social construction that is perpetuated through discourses to achieve a sense of inherent identity, meaning that it is not a natural process. On the contrary, essentialism approach on gender identity stresses that there is a true essence in our gender identity. This paper, thus, focuses on analyzing the contestation between the social construction of gender identity and gender essentialism that is postulated in the book. It also examines how the construction of Edward 39;s gender identity mdash;which is articulated to be embodying a socially constructed identity mdash;propounds the idea of gender essentialism."

"Kesetaraan gender merupakan isu yang marak dan menjadi konsep yang perlu diupayakan. Film Hollywood dalam hal ini mempunyai pengaruh global dan menjadi media penyebaran wacana yang masif. HI memiliki karakter yang dikenal dengan nilai maskulin yang lebih dominan; konsep maupun teori yang dikembangkan dalam hal ini ikut melanggengkan stereotip gender yang dibakukan. Menggunakan pendekatan feminisme dan budaya populer di HI, tesis ini menganalisis kontribusi sutradara perempuan di Amerika Serikat yaitu Greta Gerwig dan menelaah bagaimana nilai-nilai feminisme dalam film Greta Gerwig berhubungan dengan diskursus gender HI mainstream. Analisis kontribusi dan nilai-nilai feminisme yang dihubungkan ke teori HI ini dianalisis melalui dimensi produksi, representasi, dan konsumsi. Melalui analisis ketiga dimensi tersebut, ditemukan bahwa Gerwig berkontribusi dalam menyebarkan nilai kesetaraan gender; lebih sensitif gender dalam produksinya dan mendapatkan penilaian penonton dan jangkauan yang luas. Kemudian melalui dimensi representasi menggunakan lensa feminisme posmodern dengan analisis film berjudul Lady Bird dan Little Women, ditemukan bahwa nilai-nilai feminisme di film tersebut menjadi kritik terhadap wacana gender di HI tradisional, di mana ia menggugat nilai-nilai maskulinitas yang hegemonik di HI. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa film sebagai budaya populer dapat menjadi tempat untuk mempelajari bagaimana teori HI bekerja dan mendefinisikan ulang pengertian kita tentangnya.

Gender equality is an issue that continues to exist and is a concept that needs to be pursued. Hollywood films have global influence and is a massive medium for the dissemination of discourse. IR is known to embody a hypermasculine values which are more dominant; the concepts and theories contribute to the perpetuation of stereotypes and standardized gender roles, and the subordination of the feminine. Using the approach of feminism and popular culture in IR, this thesis analyzes the contribution of a female director in the U.S, namely Greta Gerwig and examines how feminist values in Greta Gerwig's film relate to mainstream IR gender discourse. The analysis of the contributions and values of feminism which is connected to the theory of IR is analyzed through the dimensions of production, representation, and consumption. Through the analysis of these three dimensions, it was found that Gerwig contributed in spreading gender equality; embody gender sensitivity in their productions and gain wide audience ratings and reach. Furthermore, through the dimensions of representation using the lens of postmodern feminism with an analysis of the film entitled Lady Bird and Little Women, it was found that the values of feminism in the film became a critique of gender discourse in traditional IR, where it challenged the hegemonic values of masculinity in IR. This shows that film as a popular culture can be a site to understand how IR theory works and redefine our understanding of it."
