Radiography is very useful as diagnostic aids and is widely used in dentistry. Panoramic radiography, as an inherent part of orthodontic examination, is a very usetul in evaluating the condition of the jaw. This paper will discuss the role of panoramic radiography examination in pathologic condition and abnormalities of teeth and jaw to support the treatment planning of orthodontic treatment.

Oral infection can have an adverse effect on other organs of the body. Oral infection especially periodontitis may effect the course and pathogenesis of a number of systemic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, pre-term low birth weight infant and respiatory disease. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the current status of oral infection especially periodontitis as a potential risk factor of systemic diseases. Three main pathways linking oral infection to secondary systemic effects have been proposed: metastatic infection, metastatic injury and metastatic inflammation. Periodontitis can cause bacteria to enter the blood stream and activate immune cells. These activated cells produce inflammatory cytokines that have a destructive effect thtoughout the entire body. Therefore, periodontitis as a mayor oral infection may eflect the host's susceptibility to systemic disease.

The purpose of this study was to determine the difference between intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) cytokine content in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) on healthy periodontal and chronic periodontitis. It was also determine the treatment effects of hydrogen peroxide as subgingival irrigation in chronic periodontitis. Twenty participants were examined in this study. Gingival fluid collection method was carry out with strip paper technique and analyzed with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The result of the study showed that there was a significant difference of ICAM-1 on healthy site and periodontitis site, and there was a significant change of ICAM-1 content after treatment (p<0.05). We concluded that ICAM-1 in GCF is a sensitive indicator to differentiate healthy sites from those with periodontitis.

Reducing pain is the first phase of treatment in dentistry. Pain can be reduced by application of peroral analgetic medicines such as paracetamol, although on certain circumstances such as pulpitis pain, this is less helpful. Eugenol is often used to alleviate acute pulpitis pain by dentists, while latex of Jatropha curcas is one of the most popular analgetic agent used by people. The objective of this study was to compare the analgetic effect of the latex of J. curcas with paracetamol by the hot plate test. Thirty male mices aged 2-3 months old, weight 20-30 grams were devided into 5 group. The lyophilized latex of J. curcas was diluted into 5, l0, and 15 % respectively, and the dose was 5 mg/Kg BW. The dose of paracetamol (positive control) was 1,3 mg/Kg BW and sterile aquabidest (negative control) was I,3 mg/Kg BW. All agents were administered orally. Analgetic activity was evaluated after 3, 6, and 24 hours. The test was considered positive if the latent time of the test group was equal or 3 times higher than the control group. Data was analized by 1 way Anova. Had it been a difference, research wool be continued using HSD test (p<0,05).172. Latex of J. curcas has the same analgetic effect as paracetamol on 3 and 6 hours observation, but was reduced on 24 hours observation.

The purpose of the present study was to test the effectiveness of a finger brush in removing plaque compared with that of a regular toothbrush. For this study, 30 subjects were selected and divided into 2 groups. Fifteen subjeds received a finger brush, another group of subjects received a regular toothbrush. The amount of dental plaque was scored by the modified PHP method. Plaque scored was carried out at five areas per tooth. The results showed that the overall reduction in plaque was 67,25% for the regular toothbrush and 44,93% for the finger brush; it was a non significant difference (p>0,170). The plaque removing efficacy of the finger brush was poorest at the mesial area (28,1% plaque reduction) compared with that of the regular toothbrush (68,8% plaque reduction). It was concluded that the plaque by means of finger brush could be an acceptable alternative to the use for children under five years age.

C-Reactive Protein and serum lipids are correlated with atherosclerosis. This purpose of this study was to prove that increasing level of hs-CRP and serum lipids were corelated with periodontitis. This was a cross-sectional approach with 63 samples. Periodontitis was determined if the pocket depth (PD) was more than 4 mm and the attachment loss (AL) was more than 2 mm. Serum lipids and hs-CRP was analized by enzymatic method and clemiluminescent (immulite hs-CRP) alternatively. With unpaired t test it has showed that there was a difference level of hs-CRP and total cholesterol in periodontitis and non-periodontitis. It was found that there was a significant positive correlation between (PD r=0.26), AL (r=0.25) with hs-CRP serum level; and PD (r=0.27), AL (r=0.30) with total cholesterol and LDL. It was concluded that there is a possibility that there is a possibility that there is a relationship berween periodontitis and atherosclerosis.
