"The so-called nation states have created ethnical minorities. Also due to migration, cultural diversity is the reality. The multicultural society is strongly reproduced in the schools all over Europe. Cultural diversity in the classroom is increasingly recognized as a potential which should not be neglected. The educational system has, above all, to provide all children with equal opportunities. Experts from Finland, the UK, Hungary, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, and other European states, mostly responsible for teacher education, have contributed to this volume with critical, but constructive remarks on the classroom reality in their countries."

"The book discusses various questions related to the different European perspectives on Taiwan, for example, how the European Union has dealt with the unresolved status of the Republic of China on Taiwan, the ways in which Europe has been seen as a model for Taiwan’s transformation, and whether the EU model offers any lessons for cross-strait integration. "This volume provides an original perspective on mobile communication, focusing on the emerging deployment of images in mobile phone usage, photography, video, mobile television, mobile internet, etc. Deeply embedded in our audiovisual culture, images possess the undeniable power to reshape the future of the mobile phone as an ?individual mass medium?. In this collection, European researchers in media and communication studies, sociology, anthropology and political science present empirical and conceptual work on a wide range of issues, including cultural change, new forms of sociability on individual and societal levels, tactics and strategies of users and producers, and finally, representations and imaginaries of the mobile phone in other established media.

Kappler, Karolin Eva
"Karolin Eva Kappler analyses the everyday life of victims of sexual violence, combining the normalcy of their daily life with the overwhelming experience of rape and sexual abuse. Based on a qualitative study, the author detects five patterns which characterize the victims? everyday coping practices and strategies. The grounded analysis of the interview material shows the fragility of the victims? lives, depending on paradoxes which reduce their freedom of choice and which explain the individual and social invisibility of sexual violence"

"Parties in Africa are often described as organisationally and programmatically weak. On the other hand, they mobilise substantial numbers of voters at election time. This contradiction provokes an interesting question: How do political parties in Africa relate to the society? How do they mobilise their voters and sympathisers, and which strategies do they employ?
Anja Osei analyses how parties in Ghana and Senegal adapt to their local context by employing locally embedded strategies."

"In the context of massive environmental problems in Southeast Asia, the countries in the region have decided, at least in some instances, to create regimes to solve these problems jointly. This empirical observation is surprising, given the Southeast Asian countries? general reluctance to regional cooperation, the governance and budgetary constraints that are typical for developing countries and the huge heterogeneity of the involved countries in terms of environmental vulnerability, economic capacity and hegemonic power. This book analyzes the creation and effectiveness of two environmental regimes, one on transboundary haze pollution and a second on resource management of the Mekong. It will be shown that regime creation is extremely problematic and strategies to overcome conflicting actor constellations are mostly lacking."

"This book contributes to the theoretical and methodological discussion about how the diverging experiences of generations and their historical memories play a role in the process of national identity formation. Drawing from narratives gathered within the Ukrainian minority in northern Poland and centered on the collective trauma of Action Vistula, where in 1947 about 140,000 Ukrainians were resettled from south-eastern Poland and relocated to the north-western areas. This study shows that three generations vary considerably with regard to their understandings of home, integration, history and religion. Thus, generational differences are an essential element in the analysis and understanding of social and political change.

Thomann, Lars
"Lars Thomann examines the ILO's wide ranging efforts to achieve compliance with international labour standards adopted by the organization and ratified by its member states. The author draws on different compliance schools of various strands of international relations theory and discusses them against the background of the ILO's compliance efforts in general and regarding the abolition of forced labour in particular. He shows that even though the ILO has experience in bringing about compliance, given its seniority and is in many cases successful in doing so, it is not well equipped to deal with persistent cases of non-compliance.

"Integration of immigrants and their descendants has been a socially sensitive and a politically pressing issue in Germany, particularly in recent decades. Being the largest immigrant group in the country, and for a number of other reasons, the spotlight has been on people of Turkish descent. From a sociological perspective, the process of identity formation is a critical step in the direction of integration. If immigrants of Turkish descent are to be integrated in the society, it is crucial to inquire how they conceive of themselves, and perceive how they are conceived by the so-called locals. Heeding Goethe, Ali Mehdi conduct in-depth interviews with seven young men of Turkish descent, born in Germany, and to analyze, utilizing the empathetic approach of the German hermeneutic tradition, the rich diversity of identity strategies that the interviewees employ."
