ABSTRAKShelter sebagai hunian bagi manusia terus mengalami perkembangan hingga sekarang. Kemajuan teknologi dan inovasi yang terus bermunculan turut membantu dalam proses perkembangan tersebut. Seiring berjalannya waktu, pengadaan hunian terkendala dengan permasalahan populasi yang terus bertambah dengan lahan yang terbatas. Solusi hadir dengan cara yang berbeda dan disesuaikan dengan lingkungan sekitar atau lebih dikenal dengan lokalitas. Penerapan konsep compact house merupakan salah satu cara yang dilakukan dalam arsitektur hunian Jepang. Studi kasus dilakukan dengan melihat prinsip compact house di Jepang untuk kemudian dikaitkan dengan compact house di Indonesia. Di Indonesia konsep tersebut coba diterapkan dengan mempertimbangkan aspek lokalitas yang dimiliki. Di Jepang, dominasi aspek budaya pada lokalitas mempengaruhi konsep compact house. Sedangkan di Indonesia, lokalitas hadir sebagai respon terhadap iklim dalam mendukung konsep compact house.
ABSTRACTShelter as a shelter for humans had been developed until now. Advances in technology and innovation that keeps popping helped in the development process. Over time, the provision of shelter is plagued with problems of growing population with limited land. The solution comes in different ways and adapted to the surrounding environment or better known as the locality. The application of the concept of compact house is one way in which the Japanese residential architecture. The case study done by looking at the principles of the compact house in Japan for later attributed to the compact house in Indonesia. In Indonesia the concept of trying to apply by considering the locality owned. In Japan, the dominance of the cultural aspects of the locality affect the concept of the compact house. While in Indonesia, locality comes as a response to the climate in favor of the concept of compact house."
