"Produksi kelapa sawit menjadi salah satu kontribusi besar pada sektor pertanian, kehutanan, dan perikanan bahkan seluruh perekonomian di wilayah Sumatera. Seluruh provinsi di wilayah Sumatera memiliki produksi kelapa sawit yang besar. Namun, produksi yang memanfaatkan berbagai jenis input termasuk input-input yang memengaruhi unsur hara dan ekosistem seperti pupuk dan pestisida dapat mengakibatkan output yang tidak diinginkan seperti deforestasi sehingga memengaruhi efisiensi ekologi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis efisiensi ekologi subsektor perkebunan dan menganalisis bagaimana pengaruh produksi kelapa sawit sebagai komoditas dominan terhadap efisiensi ekologi subsektor perkebunan di wilayah Sumatera. Dengan menggunakan data time series dan cross section dari 10 provinsi di Sumatera antara tahun 2015 hingga 2022, penelitian ini memanfaatkan data sekunder yang diperoleh dari Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) Republik Indonesia, Direktorat Jenderal Perkebunan Kementerian Pertanian Republik Indonesia, dan Kementerian Pekerjaan Umum dan Penataan Ruang Republik Indonesia. Metode yang digunakan meliputi Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) untuk membangun indeks efisiensi ekologi, serta model regresi Tobit untuk menguji pengaruh produksi kelapa sawit terhadap efisiensi ekologi subsektor perkebunan di wilayah Sumatera. Hasilnya menunjukkan hubungan positif antara produksi kelapa sawit dan tingkat efisiensi ekologi agrikultur perkebunan yang erat kaitannya dengan praktik-praktik keberlanjutan dalam industri kelapa sawit.

Palm oil production is one of the major contributions to the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors and even the entire economy in the Sumatra region. All provinces in the Sumatra region have large oil palm production. However, production that utilizes various types of inputs including inputs that affect nutrients and ecosystems such as fertilizers and pesticides can result in unwanted outputs such as deforestation, thus affecting ecological efficiency. This study aims to analyze the ecological efficiency of the plantation subsector and analyze how palm oil production as the dominant commodity affects the ecological efficiency of the plantation subsector in the Sumatra region. Using time series and cross section data from 10 provinces in Sumatra between 2015 and 2022, this study utilizes secondary data obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of the Republic of Indonesia, the Directorate General of Plantations of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, and the Ministry of Public Works and Spatial Planning of the Republic of Indonesia. The methods used include Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to build the ecological efficiency index, as well as the Tobit regression model to test the effect of oil palm production on the ecological efficiency of the plantation subsector in the Sumatra region. The results show a positive relationship between oil palm production and the level of ecological efficiency of plantation agriculture, which is closely related to sustainability practices in the palm oil industry.
